I am in the process of installing a new water pump in a 1969 6hp Johnson. My question is should I install gaskets on both sides of the pump backing plate. I just got a impeller and backing plate with the kit I got on e-bay. Seems to me there should be more. Thanks marvxyz

Gasket under the housing that holds the driveshaft seals only.None under the waterpump housing.Per original OMC/Johnson parts manual.

DHP

What keeps the water ferom leaking into the exhaust housing? Maybe I don't know how the exhaust is relieved.

Not sure we're on the same topic, but the exhaust housing will have water in it.On the back of the exhaust housing ,above the waterline, there is a port for exhaust relief when starting at low speed operation.

DHP

Re: watrer pump gasket

I think I am asking two questions. One is does Water fill up the interior of the housing of the motor to the lake water level. Number two if there are no gaskets on either side of the pump backing plate, I guess the water in the housing ares allows the pump to maintain water pressure. I've been thinking that without the pump being perfectly sealed it would lose water pressure. If I've got this straight I don't need a gasket between the two halves of the lower housing, right??

Interior around the pump is normally full of water. There IS a gasket between the pump housing and the wear plate, but none under the wear plate nor at the lower unit / mid section split. You need to look at a parts list if you're still confused.

Yes, water floods in there, through the exhaust, the lower unit-midsection seam, the leaky water pump, and all the various weep holes. As a matter of fact, usually there's a little hole in the water pump tube to spray water around on the parts in there that are not submerged to keep them cool.

And like DHPMARINE said, there's no gaskets on the stainless wear plate. My OEM books say to put gasket sealer between the plate and the lower unit, but not between the water pump housing and the wear plate. Many very good techs omit this step and it seems to work out for them. I think even the manufacturer didn't bother. But I always do.

I suppose they accounted for the leaking with the design. It's not exactly a high pressure pump anyway.

There is no gasket between the lower unit and the midsection either.

EDIT: Wildone, you're not looking at the gasket for the driveshaft seal housing immediately below the wear plate are you? Or is that for the new style plastic water pump?

Re: watrer pump gasket

Thanks for the enlightenment. I really didn't understand when I took the water pump apart, there was no gasket or gasket cement on either side of the backing plate. nor the two halves of the lower unit. Certainly, not what I expected. Thanks for the info. everyone ....marvxyz
