Re: watrer pump gasket
Yes, water floods in there, through the exhaust, the lower unit-midsection seam, the leaky water pump, and all the various weep holes. As a matter of fact, usually there's a little hole in the water pump tube to spray water around on the parts in there that are not submerged to keep them cool.

And like DHPMARINE said, there's no gaskets on the stainless wear plate. My OEM books say to put gasket sealer between the plate and the lower unit, but not between the water pump housing and the wear plate. Many very good techs omit this step and it seems to work out for them. I think even the manufacturer didn't bother. But I always do.

I suppose they accounted for the leaking with the design. It's not exactly a high pressure pump anyway.

There is no gasket between the lower unit and the midsection either.

EDIT: Wildone, you're not looking at the gasket for the driveshaft seal housing immediately below the wear plate are you? Or is that for the new style plastic water pump?
