I have a US Navy L1616DSIM tied to a generator that has a failed aftercooler and gulped a bunch of salt water when not running and without busting. Need a cooler and top end kit but cannot find parts anywhere. This is a 1968-1972 vintage. Can anyone direct me to a good source for parts and rebuilding kits for older Waukesha's? The company is now GE owned. Thank you!!

Thank you AllDodge. I did have a request filled out and sent to them. I am under the impression they specialize in reselling used parts and engines. Looking for new cooler and gasket set for the topside.

do a google search, plenty of will-fit aftermarket heat exchanger companies out there. if it was a newer vintage motor, you could contact Alfa Laval (fomerly Champ Products) in Sarasota. however not sure who was supplying Waukesha in the late 60's early 70's

Angus,

having built many gensets, and a few with Waukesha Engines. does your circuit have seawater flowing directly thru the air-to-water heat exchanger? most of the gensets we did we put a separate seawater to glycol circuit on it to not have the engine mounted HX fail and take out the motor.

can you post pics of the HX that you are referring to?

Also, old Waukesha motors may be hard to get parts for. you may have to repower. a 500kw Cummins QSX15 genset would also be nearly half the size of the old Waukesha

Raw water after cooler failed while not running ( May have been leaking cuz it was reportedly blowing white after 180 deg. F. ). Water circuited thru the overlap cyl valves and up thru the exhaust manifold. Also high enough on the intake side to leak out of the turbo silencer. Have to do the entire top side and need two new coolers and gasket set for the entire top end. Several days of contacts and searching without a hit. Need two coolers ( both sides identical). Need new cuz of the age ( used means old too). Unique to this model and vintage. If I cannot locate soon gonna make this pig into a mooring and start new.

I found a pic the other day and also found an old pdf copy of the manual, but nothing tells me dimensions. It probably wouldn't work any way but was trying to find something from other equipment's that may work in place.

Rep from GE confirmed the L1616 has not been supported for over 15 years and there are no parts in production. The OEM search showed very little available (few gaskets and ring sets) for the rebuild. I think this motor is now a brand new mooring anchor and I am hunting for a replacement. Looking towards a newer Cummins or Cat DG in the 300KW range. Any recommendations or suggestions are welcome.

Having had the Big Red C on my chest for many years..... Cummins all the way.

for 300KW, Are you looking at stand-by or continuous duty?

By newer, how new do you want to look for. depending on your local AHJ, you may need to repower new. I remember that NY city code on stand-by engines makes things a bit interesting.

Have you tried some inland oilfield companies?

Wauks are REALLY common in natural gas compressor applications...they are converted to nat gas fuel, but share piles of parts with their oil burnin cousins...Up here in the frozen north, it wasn't uncommon to see engines that hadn't been made or supported in years...Cooper-Bessemer, White-Superior, AJAX...An old Waukesha was a treat!!

Since my application is for an undergrad lab, I have elected to bite the bullet, justify the funding, and seek out a new installation that will benefit the students for decades hopefully. Cat, Cummins, etc... all being solicited. Thanks for the input!
