bunch of people on a toon......the driver slowed the boat abruptly....and the guy at the front of the boat went in........they heard a "bump" and saw him floating without a life jacket behind the boat.
the passengers dove in after him.....but he sank....they still cant find the body.

please guys.....be safe....have a safety meeting for all your new passengers so they know the rules and make sure they follow them......

i just cant imagine going to the dock with one less person on board.

Re: we lost another one today

I guess this is why years ago I got a ticket for being underway with someone in front of the gate. Learned my lesson, not from the ticket, but from the explanation from the LEO. Never done it again.

So sad in your post, bet all are feeling the grief:(

Do we REALLY need to post every single boat accident that we read about in the news on here? We may as well rename Dockside to the Obituaries.

While I can understand not wanting to see/read about every boating accident, posts like this re-inforce the need for safety, over and over. This post may have been the post that a someone with a toon reads, and realizes that what he's been allowing on his vessel can cause a deadly accident.

Remember, there are new members to this board everyday, and I'm sure they don't read all the threads from the archive. The freshest one may save a life (or two) some day.

Yes thank you for your post, I may not be a new boater but I'm a new pontoon owner. We all need to be reminded from time to time to be safe!

Re: we lost another one today

Are you kidding me??? Thx for this post. I see these infractions "every" time I'm on the water.

This is what this site should be all about. It has tremendous reach through it's many members.
We can't be or read that many articles at once. I don't get Canadian newspapers.
If more of us shared this stuff with new boaters and the just plain stupid or drunk experienced ones, there might be less deaths each season on the water.

Who would think a Pontoon boat could slow down that fast to eject the person up front. He was probably standing in front of the front railing. I'm sure alcohol was invloved with the driver and the passengers. How many adults ever wear a life jacket anyway, especially on a Pontoon booze cruise.

I see it so much, I'm tempted to make photocopies of a few of these and keep them in an envelope inboard to pass out.

I would do it, but it's law enforcement's job and over the past few years I see them around less and less. Unless of course if you count two sheriffs boats side by side shooting the breeze together. I see that a lot!

I'd like to flag these boats down, like the Big Searay type cruisers doing about 40 mph with two little kids hanging their feet over the bow. This always sickens me when I see this. I'd like to flag them all down and hand them the photocopies of a few deaths.

The marinas who rent boats are no better. They have kids setting the rentals up and 5 minutes from the dock several of their passengers are already hanging their feet over the bow. I always try and pull up and tell them it's illegal to operate a boat like that and you will get fined. I stop them because I feel bad that the marina's are more worried about charging them an extra $6 for each life preserver, but not giving them any boating safety instructions

Most of the bigger more experienced boaters would probably tell me to F off any way :(

You can always skip them. I like reading about them and learn from other mistakes.

Re: we lost another one today

Some people are morbid and like to read things like this. Others are saddened by it and do not like to read it. Somewhere in the middle is everyone else who will hopefully learn from it. As said earlier, someone new to boats may very well take away a learning experience from it without haveing to actually "experience" it. It only takes one person to make a difference in several lives.

We are always saying or reading...take a boaters safety class, learn, etc.
The people who come here want to learn and WILL learn. And these types of posts just reinforce in people the NEED to learn.
Just my opinion.

Oh, as for me, I am one who is saddened by these, and even more saddened when I think of the victims families:(.

This is why the OP posted it in Dockside "Chat" get it? This is the kind of stuff we talk about when hanging around the dock . . . If members were not alert and posted important articles that we can all learn from . . . we just might have missed this one below. I might have seen this one posted on another boating forum a few months ago.

There is something to be learned from every event boating mishap and this one is at the top of my list of don'ts . . . There is something unnerving every step along this chain of events . . . This one should be made into one of those made for TV movies, like an old Alfred Hitchcock movie

Re: we lost another one today

Another terrible tragedy, however, when you look at the amount of boats out there(especially here in Florida), the amount of stupid, and a lot of times half drunk people, out there, it is a surprise to me that this doesnt happen more often. We see more kids drowning in swimming pools here than boating accidents.

In the US 1900 people drown in swimming pools each year. So many that now the Government feels the need to step in and force all people to have alarms on their doors, or a fence all the way around our pools. I think we should supervise our children rather than have the Government mandate that every person owning a pool have to pay extra money for needless safety items.

I agree, we all need to be aware of boat safety, but all the postings of stupid people wont help stupid people. I beleive common sense is the key to a long life. If you have none, you may be in for a rough short life.

It is good to remind us of the hazzards, but with the relatively low rate of deaths compared to stupid people on the water, I think we, as boaters, are ahead of the game. I didnt look at stats, but I bet you have a better chance of dying in a car accident than you do in a boating accident.

They found the 2 bodies of a 19 and 15 years old yesterday in lake Norman. NC. They jumped from their boat and never came up. Lets be careful out the ladies.

Ok here's my point. What exactly is this supposed to teach us?
