Today, while coming back to the ramp, we noticed a pontoon boat having some problems. The guy's wife was trying to get the boat back on the trailer, but couldn't figure out why the boat wasn't moving - THE OUTBOARD WAS OUT OF THE WATER! Then, later, she was trying to give the boat some gas to slide onto the trailer bunks... Doesn't work too well when you've got the motor turned to the left! I thought the kids up front were gonna fly overboard when it finally stopped.

Moving ahead 20 minutes. I am in my truck waiting for this guy and his buddies to finish launching their 17ft bowrider... or at least I thought. They were trying to fix the darn thing right there at the launch! Finally, I started to get irritated and I backed my trailer on the ramp next to theirs... The ramp is wide enough for 2, but most people prefer to give one person at a time the space. Finally, I am ready for my wife to pull our boat onto the trailer. A minute later, as I hook the bow eye onto the trailer and make sure things look to be sitting right, I turn around to see this other guy, who pulled his truck and trailer along side mine, sitting there fiddling with this and that and taking his SWEET TIME, all the while, I am blocked from moving because he doesn't have his rig backed up far enough.

MAN! I try to be very considerate at the ramp and can understand new boaters trying to learn, but COME ON! After what seemed like forever, we finally had everything out of the water and I began to hook the transom down. I look over and there's the original guy on the pontoon boat... The boat is 24ft long and only about the first 50% is sitting on the bunks. He didn't even notice that the back 50% of the pontoons were sitting off to the left of the bunks. I just don't get it.

Anyway, had to rant. I kept my cool, but just couldn't believe it this afternoon.

i went back out this evening, after my stupid human trip, this morning, you can read it there. was towing a 28 ft open fisherman, in with the 14 ft Sport Craft. as i am lining up on the end of the dock, so i could be both boats there. this %*&# in a seadoo jet boat comes around and docks. i'm 30 feet from the dock, and he cuts in front of me. i hit the air horn and scared the crap out of him, yelled at him to get out of the way, couldn't he see i was "in tow" had the right of way. then he loaded before us, trailer too deep, wife could not get bow eye as bow was below bumper. idiot put the boat in forward, and climbs over the bow and lifts the bow. i later told the %*((^, how dangerous that was, and all he had to do as pull the trailer forward a foot.

I understand patience only goes so far.
But I would have offered assistance, especially the first one.

At our ramp, if you take 20 minutes on a busy weekend, 6 guys are gonna get out of there trucks and lift that pontoon boat onto the trailer!

Re: We need a dang boat launch ettiquite lesson...

I have been out of boating for about 5 years. Years ago, I started out with smaller boats that I could trailer 14, 18 & 20. My last boat was a 30' cabin cruiser I had to keep at the marina.

My latest boat is a 20' Searay. I have taken it out twice after purchasing it a few weeks ago................I remember NOW why I went with the 30' that I could keep in the water!!

Both trips out with this new boat, we ran into disrespectful idiots at the launch! Ahhhh, it's all coming back to me now  Coming in from the first trip out, the ramps were full and boats were staying back, lining up to wait for a ramp to become available. I was about 5 boats back and decided to give the people coming out and going in ample space to maneuver in or out....I'll be darned if 7 boats didn't zip in front of me AND the 5 other boats ahead of me!! What are people thinking?? It was more than obvious that the 6 of us were waiting to dock but they all ponied their way ahead of us!

Maybe boat launch etiquette should be a manditory saftey course? :D

Sounds like a public ramp.

In another ramp post, I stated that our neighborhood ramp courtesy is more commonplace although the ramp has it's moments - not infrequently.
Think about this. You use the ramp regularly (or even irregularly for that matter), and park your truck and trailer...all day long...in the back of a redneck neighborhood...and you teed off half a dozen of them that are still on land waiting for you to get around the first bend of the river.
Now I'm not suggesting anyone would do anything, but I have seen the aftermath of an entire back rack of rollers fall off when one guy was pulling his boat out about two years ago. There are only two bolts holding it on...sorry, were.

Have you ever pulled up behind a guy going slow in the left lane on the interstate? You give him some time.. you do the bob and weave so he sees you... you finally get around him, only by passing him on the right, and give him "the look" and you can see he, or she, has no clue what you are seemingly irritated about.

In my current lifestyle I am no longer in a hurry to get anywhere, so I am no longer pushing these folks out of the way, but for over thirty years traveling the state of Florida, with over twenty million tourists a year, I have had my fill of bad drivers. I always concluded they really did everything in their life the way they drove, and nothing will help set them straight.

Unfortunately, these same people show up at our ramps daily giving us something to write in to the forum about.

Thank you, Lord, for retirement. That means I never have to go to a ramp on the weekend!! :p

I used to boat on the same lake, every weekend, for several years.

I would pass up two public ramps for one run by a local marina.

Every weekend there was a guy out there affectionetely known as the
"Ramp Boss". Just like a traffic cop.

That guy took no crap from anyone. Mouthy boaters got banned. He had an amazing memory, knew me by name, even if I dragged a different boat there.

If a noob was having trouble, he would call an assistant to "help" them and teach them the ropes.

That place was extremely busy but ran like clockwork.

Now that sounds like a great idea!

that would be nice to have a guy like that around.

I honestly think these people have no idea they are doing anything wrong. All it would take is having the drill seargent bark at you a couple times and they would figure things out quick.

i would love a private marina, with a ramp boss, collects the 10 bucks for the use of the ramp. keeps things moving. would be well worth it. unfortunately, water front property has gotten so expensive here, there are only a few private launches any more. and several of these do not want walk in traffic.

I STRONGLY object to all of the people bashing going on in this thread. Just because they may not be members here should NOT give anyone here the right to bash them! I understand that you all are perfect, so I am trying to take that into account.

CMC,
I really don't think you should be stongly objecting. It really isn't a matter of someone being a member or not to this forum. It does however have everything to do with obnoxious and disrespectful people who fail to understand that boat launches, even public ones need to be used conservativley and efficiently. that way everyone who wishes to use them are able to.

I understand the point of the post, someone did something stupid and they got bashed for it. Someone does something stupid on the forum and you bash them, you get banned. Double standard, plain and simple. Not really surprised that no one here reads it that way though.

Re: We need a dang boat launch ettiquite lesson...

i do some stupid things sometimes and even asked a stupid question on sth last night but i have thick skin and a good sense of humor i dont mind being poked at.

i dont see it as bashing...just venting frustration...now if he had gotten out of his truck and started handing out knots on heads that would be bashing.

anyone ever use a ramp that is very seldom busy except for swimmers???
what really chaps my hide is the "no swimming" signs.......but they do it anyway. sometimes i have to wait 5 mins for people to finally get out of the water so i can load/launch my boat.

cmc they bash the idiots at the ramps ,because most of them should take the time to learn there boat and trailer teqniques .
im in south louisiana the ramps here are used by people that fish or boat daily if your holding up they will simply put in scary close to you and be gone before you can get your boat on the trailer, the same coming out
but i understand haveing trouble i was putting my boat on the other day and trim went out ,couldnt pull up ,had to unscrew manual release and pickup by hand , but one of the local guys jumped right in the water with me to pick it up ,its the ones that ty down on ramp or left keys or plugs or forgot there paperwork so on and so on ,there just venting here its all good
