I remember my dad talking about my grandfather being part of a crew in (1905?) cutting huge chunks of ice out of the Mississippi at the Quad Cities during winter. They'd pack the ice in sawdust, to be used to cool the iceboxes in peoples' homes over the summer.
They'd be hard pressed to depend on that now. I've seen the Mississippi frozen over only a couple times in the last decade or so.
It also makes big news when the Great Lakes freeze over -- again, only a couple times in the last decade.
