Re: Weed eater outboard

Hi,
I was running the outboard out the water, also had no prop on. Dosen't matter anymore, got a brand new mculloch whipper snipper engine, runs extreemly well, starts every time. I got of a sight called "Gumtree" Don't know if anyone's herd of it before but anyway, I just put an ad up saying "if anyone has any whipper snippers they want to throw out, I'd be happy to have them" and so I ended up with a mculloch 25cc and an electric ryobi whipper snipper. The man that brought the mculloch used it once and the "shaft broke" so he gave it to me for two beers so I'm pretty happy whit that deel. On that same day a person replied saying he had a 40 hp 1968 johnson that was used in the military, the shaft was bent and seized onto the powerhead. I know how to get the shaft out But I don't know how to straiten it out. Is it even repaiable? The motor also came with a 55 hp chrysler missing a powerhead, 3 metal fuel tanks and the manuals.
Just another update.

May get some pictures of the outboard once I've finished building the motor.

Re: Weed eater outboard

Finally got the motor working, the shaft connects up good, the gears work good I just need to cut down the prop a bit more, still needs a fair bit of work but I got it up and running. I tested it in water today and the deeper the prop got the slower it went. If I cut down the prop about 10mm it should run nice. It is pretty loud though because the shaft must be tapping against something. I just have to put a rubber pipe around the shaft or something to make it quiet.

Re: Weed eater outboard

it will go slower the deeper you go. you will also need an anti-cav plate

Re: Weed eater outboard

Hi,
I think the motor already has an anti-cav plate, because I used the hole lower unit of a 1968 3 hp johnson, should I make a lower anti-cav plate since the prop is a bit further away from it? I did cut it down.

Also,
Is it normal for a whipper snipper engine to get a bit hot after running it under load, When I ran it today water flicked up onto the exhaust ant it sizlled and steamed a fair bit. I suppose I'll have to pay more attention to hov eth whipper snipper acts next time I trim the lawn to see how hot it gets.

YEAH RIGHT!!!!!
The drive shaft just keeps on stripping.....I've done way too much work on this little motor!!!!
I'm going to try and get a 5 hp mariner air cooled powerhead and lower unit and I'll just use the mid section because the little 25cc won't spin the prop no matter how small I cut it. So I'm sorry I couldn't get a video but once I get the right engine and lower unit I will be back to work.

Re: Weed eater outboard

2 stroke 1.6 hp motors such as the 25cc that you have need to get the RPM up to make 1.6hp.

have you seen the 5hp briggs and stratton outboards http://www.smalloutboards.com/images/bg5/side1.jpg

its a standard 4-stroke air cooled lawnmower engine coupled to an outboard center section with a flex coupler.

Re: Weed eater outboard

Yeah,
I've seen that outboard before, The only difference between the standard briggs lawn mower and the briggs outboard is the lawn mower has a light flyweel, if you take the blades off, it won't run.
I'm just going to use an old outboard lower unit and powerhead so it may not be a weed eater outboard anymore but I guess it will still be partly homemade.
Will still give updates when I come across an engine.

Re: Weed eater outboard

Depending on the type of outboard I get, I'm hoping i get a 3.5-5 hp outboard. It would make it easy if I got an air-cooled outboard but I guess I'd just be pushing my luck.
Heres a couple pictuers of the types of outboards I'm looking for:

Re: Weed eater outboard

Hi,
Just found an outoard, don't know what type it is since it was painted over, but the ID plate says made for mercury, Made in Japan.
It has a grey plastic lower cover and a 5 hp mariner type leg. Migh get the serial number tomorow. Don't know if it'll be much help though since I don't know what make the motor is. The motor is air-cooled, a similar set up to a 5 hp tohatsu.
Also the motor is 3.5 hp.

Re: Weed eater outboard

Just realised this motor is a 3.5 yamaha.
Mine's just painted green.

Re: Weed eater outboard

Hi,
I don't think I can go on with this project, It'll be too hard to weld up the brackets for the power-head and the lower unit. If I did get to do good welds on the power-head and lower unit I wouldn't be able to take it apart if it broke down. So sorry I got no vids of the motor but still might be able to post a vid of the outboard I was going to use.
Thanks for all the help and replies!!!:D

Re: Weed eater outboard

its most likely a tohatsu. they make the outboards for Merc, yamaha, nissan, etc.

Re: Weed eater outboard

Hi,
I've had a 5 hp air cooled tohatsu of a similar type. Its definatly not the same color as this. I carfully scrached some paint off with a knife to see any traces of origonal paint and there was paint the exact seme color as a yamaha or a mariner. So I've found out that the blue paint isn't factory paint

Re: Weed eater outboard

I reckon I'll give it another shot at fixing the outboard. I just rebuilt my homelite and put the mculloch carby on it.
