I have a wellcraft 180 classic with an AMC in/out that runs perfect except that i have a difficult time putting it on neutral when i'm going either forward or backwards. I have to mess with the shifter everytime harder. Any help will be appreciated, need to take it to the lake soon.

There are some OMC gurus on the board. I know nothing about them, but it sounds like one of the notorious electric shift adjustment issues they have.

Here's a link you should read. OMC Cobra drives are notorious for eating gear sets if not adjusted to perfection. It is long but will help you understand the whole scenerio. http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/

I must be getting to be a old timer here. Cause i'm gonna scold you for not posting, year, model, hp of motor.

Oh it's OMC.

And yes stuart thread should help you out.

And no it's not a electric shift.

One thing i would try before i start the stuart adjustments. Idle should be 650-700. If to high will mess your gears up.

Unplug the esa module. And run it see if it shifts easier.

Don s the master has posted a fix for the esa that will allow you to wire as a merc.

Good luck !

If it shifts well into gear, but doesn't want to go into neutral, make sure the idle is low enough as noted above, most specs are 500-600 in gear in the water, that usually translates to 650 on the hose in the driveway. The ESA has to work for it to shift to neutral, so if you don't hear the engine briefly stutter as you try to hit neutral that is a suspect area. A sticky or maladjusted transom shift cable can also cause this. Finally there is a pocked in pivot housing (part of the transom that the drive bolts to) that can get packed with crud if the transom gasket does not seal right. It can get behind the bellcrank and cause shifting to be difficult. I always clean out that area and pack it with triple guard grease (OMC/Bombardier grease).
