Well, here goes nothing, SS160 Rebuild

Well, I guess I should start a thread, just had a project boat fall in my lap.
This poor SS160 has been sitting in my mothers back yard for the last 4 seasons due to a no charging situation with the 90 Johnson after a powerhead rebuild and my step-dad's refusal of my help to diagnose it. Ended up just being a voltage regulator.
The first three winters it didn't get covered until after the first snow fall that stayed and not at all last winter so the floor is pretty shot.
He decided to upgrade to a 20 foot Alaskan this summer rather than fix the floor, so for helping him swap the 90 over the Starcraft is mine. He built consoles for the Lund, lengthened the trailer to suit and swapped the windshield over, but, I am trying to find him one better suited to the Alaskan so I can have it back.

I unfortunately don't have current pictures of the poor neglected starcraft, but here it is circa 04:

The top and bow tonneau have been off of it and in the garage for years, and are still in good shape, if they haven't shrunk to the point they no longer fit.... LOL

So far having my girlfriend pay a visit to her father's neighbor with an offer of removal looks to have rewarded me with a glasser donor boat that hasn't moved in forever and a day, but has an 89 or 90 Johnson 70 on it judging by decals and an ez-loader trailer.
Pictures aren't great, I'll grab better ones on friday when I get it.

I highly doubt that the hull is heading anywhere but the dump, but, it'll make a good trailer donor, probably for the alaskan so I can have my proper trailer back, and possibly a power donor for my boat, apparently they have more parts they think are for it in the garage that come with it.

I want to modify it a bit, raising the consoles is a possibility as I am kind of long and the captains chair is a little uncomfortable for me, and I am thinking of setting up the bow more along the lines of a superfisherman.
If the 70 doesn't work out I have a 55 at work that was taken on trade years ago(we are a Yamahammer dealer,) and if all else fails, I have a 1940 Johnson AT-10 5 horse that will eventually get me somewhere.... lol

Hopefully that wasn;t too long and rambling...
Evan

Welcome to iboats, Evan. Glad to have you aboard.

Looks like you will be busy for a while.

Make sure you get paperwork/title for that donor boat, as many junk yards won't take them unless you can provide paperwork.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Well this is a different intro to the Tin Club. An SS and a glass donor all rolled into one. :) Nice to have a GF looking out for you, too. Get some current pics and show us what you have to work with. Welcome to the Tin Drydock.

Welcome Evan!!

The boat certainly looked good 9 years ago and if that 70 is tip-top, she'll push that 16' really well!

that glasser is sitting there...just begging for the sawzall to put it out of its misery

This won't be the first glasser I have decommissioned to save a tinny, just the first time I have done it for myself.
I think the 70 should push it well, not quite what the 90 would do, but it should still be plenty fun. Best gps with the 90 that I recall was 47, I hardly expect that out of the 70. Mind you my last experience with a 70 involved a Holiday 14 and speeds well beyond sane... LOL

I would really like to go 4 stroke on it, but a Yamaha will come in the future.

Hey, welcome to the starmada!

Looks like this'll turn out well - you've got the idea on pics at least! Just promise you'll mix in some pics of tin between the glass donors!

Well, I went and took a look at the donor boat. I haven't seen a transom that bad in a while... LOL
Someone was mid engine removal when the project was sidelined. Controls are un hooked and the motor is partly unbolted.
Even if it was bolted down I would be scared of losing the motor if I was going more than the few hundred feet I will be going.

Never ran across that manufacturer before.

Motor is for sure a 1990, nice and clean under the hood, it isn't seized and it feels good turning it over by hand. I will get the compression gauge out once I get it attached to something solid.

I'll get some pictures of my poor neglected SS tomorrow, got wrangled into helping a buddy get a 7.3 power stroke that hadn't ran in 4 years going tonight... Lol

I looked at the seats the right way and they came loose... LOL

I'm starting to think I won't be removing the old floor in big pieces... LOL

Not a crack or mark in the splashwell or any of the supports, transom wood that I can get to feels/looks useable, but I will change it this winter. If I can get it on the water this fall, it will get used as is.

Re: Well, here goes nothing, SS160 Rebuild

Well, a whole $100 later and I have the donor boat at home... Trailer tires even hold air... LOL
It definatley isn't 100%, but I'll be damned if the thing doesn't run. I did nothing but hook it up to a battery and a tank of good fuel, pump up the bulb, prime it and turn the key.
http://youtu.be/BLWuqmdovTE

I haven't put a compression guage on it yet, but the top cyl is definatley low. It isn't completley dead, as it is running on it, so, there may just be hope of saving it. T&T works nicely, was rebuilt not long before it was parked, lower unit shifts nicely too, skeg is broken, but that isn't a huge disaster. Prop is mangled, but, again, not a deal breaker by any means.

I am always baffled by the boats left uncovered and out in the elements :(
At least it gives those who need donor boats a healthy supply! I think you have the makings of a great project.

Made some good progress today. Glasser is gone, floor is on its way out.

I was without an engine hoist at home, so I improvised:

Good luck with your project. It is such a shame that people let nice boats rot away. Keep the pics coming.

Well, weather got in the way of progress. So until next weekend it will sit like so:

Not a loose rivet or a leak in the hull, below the rotten wood and foam there is a nice solid boat.
