I know an outboard will turn up, I wasn't even looking for a tank when I stumbled across this one, but I knew in the back of my mind that sooner or later, if I got an antique outboard, I was going to need one, so maybe I shouldn't be looking so hard for the motor :)

I've been watching the prices on those tanks, and I figured I'd be lucky if I could find one local for 50, so when this one came up for 20, I jumped on it, I've been watching the local ads for out boards but so far, haven't really found what I'm looking for, either their trashed, and they want to much for them, or their really nice and they want WAY to much for them, I did see a nice 10 horse Evinrude the other day for 200, it was a late 50's but it was a long shaft and I want a short shaft, so I'll keep looking, there was a 5 horse I saw that looked clean, and the guy wanted 40 bucks for it, he said he didn't have a tank and had no way of running it and the first 40 that showed up would get it, by the time I called, it was gone.

I figure I'll be happy to find anything from 20 HP down to about 5 or so

Good scoop!

Go for an 18. I have lots of them and they are great engines. Excellent power/weight ratio :)

Re: Wha-whoooo!

speaking of old motors, wish I had a thousand bucks right now, I just found this on craigs list

"Never-used 1937 9.7 HP Evinrude outboard engine with long shaft. Four cylinders and a repair box full of COMPLETE rebuilding components including new brass prop, plugs, piston, etc. Was issued to a NW county for civil defense prior to WW II and there sat for 50 years before purchased by current owner. Is operational! Owner started once in tank and it started right up! A steal at $995.00 (You pick up)"

I've been keeping an eye out for an 18 horse, that would be nice to find one that's not all beat up, but what year did they start making them?

I was hoping to find something between 15 and 20 horse, and 1957 fits the bill pretty well, the boats rated for 20, and I have a newer 10 horse on it now, so someting a little bigger then the 10 but not any bigger then a 20 would be perfect I think, just need to keep looking.

If you want a super reliable 15-18 hp, look for an OMC product (Johnson, E-rude, Gale) made between 57 and 65. Check the AOMCI site, aomci.org, for swap meets in your area and just keep your eyes open. $1000 is kinda ridiculous for that old E-rude, but value is in the eye of the beholder.

Yes, the 15 turned into the 18. I have never had a 15 but have many 18's and they are great engines. They make my 14' aluminum fly. Parts are easy to come by. I would never pay more than $250 for one though and it would have to be in top shape. My average price I pay for them is $80-$100 and they need a tad of work.

Re: Wha-whoooo!

here's an early 50's 7.5 HP Evinrude, I've been talking to the guy on the phone, he wants 75 for it, it belonged to his grand dad, the number on it is 4443-28510 I believe that to be about a 51? the motor is in good shape with out seeing a lot of use, but there's corrosion on the top of it that ate into the fuel tank so the fuel tank would have to be replaced, not sure what caused the corrosion, it sat in the back of the grand dads garage for years and no one ever remembers him using it for anything, I'm not sure if it's worth $75 or not, I need to decide pretty soon if I want to buy, but, hey, what's your thoughts?

Re: Wha-whoooo!

here's a picture of the tank, there's a little surface rust, but the inside is clean and shiny, doesn't look like it's had fuel in it for years, it's bone dry, I figured I'd tear it apart, bead blast it, and repaint, it should clean right up, and it's absolutely dent free

Good score. That one's from the late 1950's and its the better style with the plastic primer button. You can get replacement decals for it to. I think the rebuild kit is around $40. If its in good working condition, I'd just sand it down and paint it. Actually, I'd just run it as is since it'll just get scratched up anyway.

Re: Wha-whoooo!

Boy, that was a great find! I got mine with the motors I bought on ebay and had a lot of problems getting the first one shipped. It seems to be a problem for everyone or else everyone is trying to make the extra buck selling 'em separate, because I noticed not many come with tanks anymore. I saw the site one time that describes them as "time bombs waiting to explode". I guess they have a long fuse because these are 50-something years old and they still haven't "gone off". I really like my pressure tanks. I'm not nearly as wise and patient as you! You really should place a free wanted ad on AOMCI.com. Unlike WBeaton and F-R, who are both members, most of those folks are really helpful and will make you a good deal. ;) I was astonished at the response to my ad on there. I bought an HD-20 from a member and it was really nice for a great price. THe guy even shipped the motor before I even sent him payment for it, if that tells you what kind of folks you're dealing with.
I'm anxious to become a member, myself.
Good luck,
JB

Re: Wha-whoooo!

I was wondering what vintage that tank was, I'm going to strip it and have it painted, I'll end up getting a rebuild kit for it, I'll shop around, I have a couple of the newer single line tanks and what's surprising to me is that you can get just about anything you need for the older pressure tanks like the one here, but I haven't seen much in the way of parts for the newer ones.

I'm sure I'll come across an old outboard, just the same as I did with this tank, I'll keep my eye out, but as with the tank, I wasn't really looking for it when it showed up, sooner or later, an outboard will turn up the same way

Re: Wha-whoooo!

So did you get the 7.5? Make sure it has compression before paying $75 for it unless you're just looking for parts...

chinewalker has the parts needed to fix it, but by the time I get the 75 dollar motor, then get the parts from chinewalker, then taking the time to fix it, I figure I'll be better off to keep looking for an 18 horse, I've got a 10 horse now, I would rather go for an 18 then a 7.5, someone posted on that other thread that they have a early 50's 7.5 and their still looking for carb parts for it, I don't want one that's going to be quite that hard to get parts for.

when it comes to getting another motor, everything will just click if it's the right one, so I'll keep looking, and when the right one comes along, I'll know.

Re: Wha-whoooo!

If the option is between a 7.5 and an 18 I'd take the 18 in a blink. Not a lot heavier, way faster and easy to get parts as they're from '57 on...
