Re: What an IO is best at

It's so amusing to listen to the OB I/O debates. I'm so glad that I've had each and know what is best for me... neither.
Maybe a pod drive will show up sometime on a nice twenty something sport boat to make me look again.

On a totally different note: I bet you're over your vehicle's rated tow capacity.

But yu can get OB with swim platforms. My old Campion had 2 small ones or 2 other boats I am looking at have a full width platform with the OB's mounted on special brackets on the platform.

Both of these are big water boats though, not really meant for use at the local lake.

Bah.
The only glowing "sunset" I want to see from the rear of my I/O is the two balls of fire from the nitro I'm burning.
And I like my engine inside the boat for easy polishin'

... practicality to the wind, that engine pegs +11 on the cool-o-meter.

Looks like someone's been working on his new Starcraft during the long Canadian winter, eh? :D

So that 4.3LV6 on a 20 footer hit 48+ MPH? Are you in one of those states that legalized marijuana? Crap, I don't believe the OB speed claim either. I have a 150HP Johnny on a 21 footer. I can get 40MPH, but no more. I had an 18 footer with a 4.3LX. Low 40s was all I could manage.

Yep, easily. I test drove 2 of them with same V6. 48-50 mph at WOT(GPS) on both of them. Bought the same boat with V8 for the added ability to pull tubes etc. Plus more top speed.

Read for yourself. ( click on the "performance" tab)

Do the same for the 217 Blackfin with 175hp outboard, and you will see what I mean. Add 6 people to the boat, and your numbers may vary:joyous:

Sorry, That is way out of the realm of my experiences. Stock boat/motor combos rarely go 50MPH, as liability costs go up with speed.

except bass boats...

also remember boat is not loaded with crap when it is at a dealer and usually 1/2 tank fuel or less.

At least you are being honest. I did a lot of research and sea trials in new boats before we purchased one. The speeds are easily achieved with newer boats in this size range.

Re: What an IO is best at

FWIW, my 2004 18' Four Winns with a 150 HP OB does 46 mph on GPS. The boat is is rated for 175 hp and the extra 25 hp supposedly bumps the top speed to 48 mph.

With a 4.3 220 hp MPI V6 top speed is supposedly 54 mph

The carbed 4.3 190 HP -- 50 mph

The same boat was also available with a 5.0 220 hp (carb) V8 that could push it to 54 mph also.

All have the same exact hull, same exact profile below the water line. The only difference is the the top cap and a small notch at the transom for the OB.

Re: What an IO is best at

Maybe more pertinent than just the top speed is the cruising RPM, speed and fuel use.

Some have a false belief that OBs use more fuel. That is untrue, especially considering new DI 2-strokes and FI 4-strokes.

Same 18' Four Winns

150 Evinrude DI - Cruise 29 mph, 3500 rpm, @ 5 gph
190 HP 4.3 - Cruise 29 mph, 3000 rpm, @ 7 gph
220 HP 5.0 - Cruise 32 mph, 3000 rpm, @ 8 gph

Re: What an IO is best at

Another big advantage of on IO is the more people the better the IO handles it because of the higher low end torque. My uncles OB powered boat has trouble planeing with 6people on board.
