What can anyone tell me about this motor?

I got my hands on my 1st boat last week....a 1961 Hydrodyne Runabout with a 35hp Evinrude 2 cycle Lark engine.

Boat and motor are in great shape....I would like to get some info on the engine as I cannot find a model number on the motor anywhere.....but it does have a golden jubliee emblem on the motor which was the year 1959........so I am guessing that this motor is a 1959.

Are these decent running motors?......the guy I got the boat from told me he last had it out about a month ago and it ran well.......I am going to fire it up this week in a barrel to hear it run for myself.

Also one more newbie question.....the boat came with a very large deep cycle battery.....can I charge this battery the same way I would charge a car battery?

not sure on the motor but as far as the battery...If you only have a standard charger that's not a "smart charger" with all the settings..go ahead and put it on the 2 amp setting and let it charge up over a day or so. It'll be fine.

model # should be on the front of the mounting bracket, between and just above the mounting clamps, or on a freeze plug on the engine block. need to know model # before any advice. hate to lead you wrong.

35hp Larks were made in 1957-58-59. 1957 hood was metal and flipped up on one side. 1958 hood was still metal but lifted off in one piece instead of flipping up. 1959 hood was fiberglass and lifted off in one piece. 1959 was the Golden Anniversary of Evinrude and should have a gold (plastic) medallion on it. 2009 (now) is the 100th Aniversary of Evinrude.

Ya I saw that tag.....only numbers there on that tag are a serial number 12755.

clean the plate off, then tonight look at it with a flash light.

There is no model number on that plate.....is there anywhere else on this engine that might show the model number?

Ok with the help from Evinrude the model number of this engine is 35517.....1959 Evinrude Lark 35hp 2cycle engine.

This motor appears to be in very good shape and very clean......but we want to run it in a barrel and being this my 1st boat I do not know much about starting it.

Any help and or advise about this motor and or running it in a barrel will be my 1st lesson.

Can I use a rubber barrel?.......does it matter as long as the barrel holds water?

It could be made outa clay...as long as that motors down in some water your golden....
