I'm a stock trader; or more specifically, an agency trader. Usually when I tell someone that for the first time they think I'm a stock broker. Some of them understand the difference when I explain, and some don't. I've found that the best thing is to ask them if they really want to know before the conversation begins in earnest. That tends to cut down on the glazed over eyes and vacant stares from people who really don't care and were just making conversation.;) My poor parents still don't know what I do, but that's okay. I cooked my way through school and amazingly still enjoy rattling the pots and pans and swinging the knives. I'll occasionally cater an event for a friend if they really want me to.

Interesting Incoop, I get the same thing...spent 26 years in mortgage banking and folks most always confused it with a broker too. Business lost it's inimacy for me when things went so techy so I moved to the beach and opened a catering firm. I get to go to all the best parties:Dundefined

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

Maintenance man, all things injection molding (plastic), from processing to mold repair to robots to major machine repair. Basically, whatever it takes to keep the job running, up to and including facility maintenance. 12 hour night-shift the last 2 years, but less BS from idiot managers.....

<<)))(((>>

Brings back memories. We did a lot of injection molding at my plant. When I retired we had about 40 presses from 400T to 3000T. After 22 years I knew enough about injection molding to be really annoying to the process guys and toolers.

It's an insipid, soul-crushing business, but I work for a great company. They're really good to me.

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

I went to school for electrical engineering but couldn't hack calculus. I had an internship one summer at an engineering firm thinking I'd be doing drafting or something like that. However, what they really wanted was for someone to create an intranet web site for them and program some applications for it. I enjoyed doing that and saw it as a possible career (I could never see myself "designing" ANYTHING as an EE) and when I dropped out of school they were kind enough to immediately hire me on full time with benefits. I had a number of different jobs in a few short years all doing web development. Finally ended up in the health insurance industry (stability was a good thing) and have worked for a third party administrator, a BlueCross plan, and now a benefits administrator for the state workers of PA. Went back to school somewhere in there and got my degree in computer science which is what I should have done in the first place. It's pretty boring though so I'm kinda looking for something else, perhaps work for a consulting company where at least my projects would be more varied.

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

2 active 2 inactive military
2 years millwright
9 years as a state air quality technician at a medical education and research facility
8 years in the private sector after that
2 years of surgeries and rehab after an auto accident
and have spent the last 4 years in college re-educating myself for a new line of work. I have no plans of retirement, nor do I expect to be able to afford retirement. At least not any time soon.

Along the way I worked 2 jobs a lot of times to be able to afford the things life throws at you, and during some layoffs I had the opportunity to take jobs which I knew absolutely nothing about and learn how to do some interesting things I would have never done otherwise.

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

Great thread, Fireman!!!

I'm a Paramedic on a Critical Care Transport Team for a hospital in Southwest Georgia. We transport critically ill and injured patients from "outlying" hospitals to ours, for a higher level of care. We also transport to other hospitals for higher level and specialized care. We transport and care for neonates through geriatric patients. We have 5 large ambulances which are mobile intensive care units, two of which are dedicated neonatal intensive care transport trucks.
