Re: What Did/Do You Do?

Twenty years as a security force member in the USAF. Then twenty years teaching at an alternative high school. Now weighing whether to continue teaching or to try something else.

Talk about a coincidence...Our middle son just completed his basic training in the USAF (Lackland AF base in Texas) in October and just last week finished his courses in security forces! He left last Friday to go to Germany for 2 years! Lucky kid...

This is like recycling a career!!

tomato or vinegar.....

...or mustard?

Wow, it really is amazing how many different careers and backgrounds my fellow iboaters have. I guess I am a relative youngster considering I am 36 and nowhere near retirement...

Being a municipal police officer and firefighter is what pays my bills for the past 11 years, but I enjoy woodworking, golf, and building computers on the side. I also own a Big Green Egg grill/smoker and enjoy making backyard bbq for the family. Mustard-based sauce is the rage around these parts.

Oh, yeah, almost forgot to mention lurking the iboats forum and cruising Lake Murray, SC in my boat...goes without sayin' I guess.

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

For the last 11 years I've been the technical director at a large Methodist church. Four venues with high end sound, lighting, and video projection. I also produce and edit all of their videos amongst many other things...
On the side I mix live sound and studio engineer and have been playing the drums for about 16 years.
It's all pretty fun and I can make a decent living as long as I work about 60 hours a week. :D

So, how many feel that the fickle finger of fate played into where they ended up today? For example, I was going to school to be an architect, working my way through as a draftsman ( when things were still done with pen/pencil and paper) then graduated to printed circuit boards then to integrated circuits. Next thing, architecture was a distant memory.

Rocky,

I went to school to be an architect and unfortunately followed through. Left my old firm (Also soul crushing - the firm, not leaving) in October to head out on my own. Married up, as others have noted :), to a girl from Naperville! Should have gone into technology...

Became an electrician, did that for about 10yrs. Was offered a Millwright apprenticeship so I did that. Then after a few years of working as a dual ticketed journeyman I got in to safety. Now I have a high level safety advisor(consultant) designation. Working on semi-retirement, part time as a safety advisor on a mega project here in Newfoundland.

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

Every since I was a kid there were three things I always wanted to do, Drive a tractor trailer, be a cop, and get my pilot's license.
Fist real job was in a factory cutting paper for business cards. I realized real quick that I did not want to be trapped in a factory all day doing the same thing everyday.I then got a job as a trailer mechanic repairing damaged trailer trucks. (Like with they try to duck under a bridge). Then from there I started driving and did that for about 13 years. During that time I also attended the police academy and now work for two towns and dispatch for ten. Some days I'm taking the 911 call others I'm responding to the 911 call. So now I have done two of the three things I've wanted to do, I am currently reading everything I can about getting my pilot's license and trying to get up enough nerve to actually take an intro flight. (38 years old and have never even been in a plane of any kind).

I also work in Animal Control as well as Humane Law Enforcement.
