I couldnt find it anywhere either, so i thought i was ordering it from crowley marine but then soon found out it was a replacement kit, Im just hoping I can make it work looks like the bottom of the shift rode is bigger than the one they sent me so who knows maybe Ill have to take different things to a machine shop to get it right. I hate doing this but Im already past the point of no return!

Ok not postive here, but on that axle shaft that little washer with the "fingers" looks to me like a retaining ring. See if there is a engraved ring around the axle at that point. The fingers if indeed it is a retaing washer, will be in that groove. If it does have that groove and the fingers are in that groove then theres your way of getting the axle out...oh, and theres never a no point of return bro...just a point of ya may as well fix it! LOL Keep your head up man...you'll find it out.

OK, I have recently taken apart my force 85hp lower unit and put back together so hopefully I can help you out. First, I am a little confused at why you are taking it completely apart. Is the new shift rod threaded differently than the old one? Opening up the whole lower unit won't give you much more room to work with when it comes to the shift rod, you should be able to do everything you need to with what you already have taken apart.

this project started because he was unable to find the OEM replacement seal for the original shifter rod... it is a bellows type... we have each been unable to find the replacement...hence...the seal replacement kit he is trying to install that comes with a new cover plate and seal....from what I have read , the diameter of the new shift rod seal will not accept the OEM shift rod...

Re: What did I get myself into with my lower unit?

Thats right, the new replacement is one solid rod where as the old existing is 2 pieces the top piece threads into the lower one that threads into the shifting arm in the foot. And I want to change the seals on the prop shaft, and also I need to replace the top bearing on the pinion gear shaft so I need the get it apart. Theirs alot of play on the top bearing so a replacement is necessary I feel. As for the retaining ring, there is none the manual shows I need a puller and that threads on the prop shaft and then I need to take 2 7inch bolts and thread them into the 2 bolt holes where the diode attaches to, then put it in gear and turn the pinion gear shaft which ever way necesary to unthread the puller in which will pull it out.

OK, I understand now why you want to take the whole lower unit apart if you wanted to replace the bearing spool seals and mess with the drive shaft bearings. As far as the shift rod, if the threads are too big for the shift arm that it threads into, you may have more problems once you get everything apart. You are going to have to replace the shift arm with one that accepts it. If the kit you got is the one for the older lower units (pre 1990) that had the one piece shift rod, I have an extra shift arm and pivot pin if you need it, just PM me. As far as getting the lower unit apart, what you have been doing should work, its just a pain to get the seals broken if they are overly corroded. The puller the manual speaks of isn't much different than what you are doing other than it threads onto the prop shaft and unthreads when you turn the driveshaft, which, in turn pulls the bearing spool out. All you should be doing is tightening the nuts on what you have made which will pull it out. Just make sure you have equal pressure on those nuts. I had to use heat on mine as I had the same problem and I just about gave up but the outer seal finally broke free. Hope this helps.

Oh the new seal will accomidate the new seal but due to the lower 2nd shift rod being larger when I shift into forward gear the new top houseing will not allow the lower rod to go up.
I just got a steering wheel puller from my dad and will try it when I get home hopefully itll work, Im sure itll work better than the aluminum back yard rig I have set up and hasnt worked.

I may need it but what size is it? What I am hopeing is when I unscrew the lower shift rod their will be a threaded nipple that connects the 2 and the new will screw into the linkage in the foot.

that explains the bellows set-up....nothing wrong with the puller set-up you have.. sometimes a whack with a dead-shot hammer , while under mechanical pressure...will break something free... its a celebration when that happens...lol I was replacing a lower ball joint on a Ford F150... it wouldn't budge ... I kept checking that I wasn't hanging it up on the puller...finally , I torqued the puller down ,and gave it a whack with a big hammer... it popped right out....NICE

Haha I was tapping the crap out of it last night sounded like I was a blacksmith not from the force but from the amount I was tapping it LOL:D
Was even trying heat and no better heat than map gas! So I might fool with it tonight or not we'll see I know I need to get it done summer is here and I want to enjoy the boat sometime! I havent gotten it in the water yet and am anxious (patiently anxious that is). As long as no other problems will occure or Im gonna piece this motor out and try to get close to buy another one that I wont have to do too much to. The guy I got this rig from ran it in salt water all the time and then katrina hit and it sat in the yard till I decided to save it. Shes being very difficult for me to save but havent given up hope!:)

You can unscrew your old shift rod right now and see if the new one fits. It isn't hard at all to take out and put in the shift rod. You will easily be able to see where the new one fits when you look in through the top of the gear case with the old rod out.

Awsome I was able to unscrew it and sure enough their was a nipple on the end! So that went well change out the old with the new I used the steering wheel puller and of course no luck so I give Up. Reassembled the top houseing and noticed that the bearing I was looking at on the top of the pinion gear has a double type bearing and they looked fine minus the little bit of play on them, so Im putting it all back together and am going to try it out. Hopefully my oil leak etc is solved with the new assembly.
One think I am a little worried about it all the heat I put on it I hope I didnt damage any seals. The one I can see on the prop shaft looks fine so only time will tell! The first picture is the replacement. the other picture is the old rod, the one that was on the top is in the middle the one that was lower is the one on the right. And the one on the far left is the extra one they sent me. Im guessing for a long shaft? I just hope I dont have to do any adjustment because If so I may be in trouble:(

Other question is does anyone have this us marine controller? Is their any way to adjust the distance you have to push forward or reverse so it will ingauge sooner?

Sounds good to me. I wouldn't worry too much about the heat you applied but you should still keep an eye on it. The rear seal on the bearing spool is the one that you would need to worry about as the water is able to freely get to it because of the water intake on the lower unit. I would think that you should be fine after the shift rod seal replacement. Good luck!!

Smoke, lemme know what the part # is and where you found that kit...your lower unit is identical to mine...if the 3M 5200 fails , I'll be looking to replace it as well...by the way ...what did it look like under the seperator plate ? On mine , many of the walls had vanished from corrosion and I had to reform them with JB weld and flat file them ...and that kit would make all of that new again for me

I welded on a replacement skeg !.....I am a bit worried about heat damage...I did have it sitting skeg up for the welding and took my time...but had to make several passes on each side...came out nice though...lots of grinding!!! I bought the skeg from iboats...$29.00

I got this one from crowely marine for i think 128 or so, I looked at boats. net and found one for like 107 just look up your model number and then click on the bellows seal or scroll down till you find the number usually theres 2 listings for it one right under the other after you scrolled down. Take your time and be patient when removing the old casting its a pain in the behind.

Damn welding? thats alot hotter than mine got! Im mainly concerned about the seals for the prop shaft, I know the bearing housing isnt going to leak theres not possible way its welded shut with corrosion!

Re: What did I get myself into with my lower unit?

Smoke,
I have that controller. There isn't much you can do with it. You will need to do the adjustments at the motor end.

I'm in the process of changing the shift linkage seal on my 1988, I already have the 1 piece rod, and my gear case cover looks different than yours. I'm guessing due to my engine bieng a 1 piece driveshaft, looks like yours is a 2 piece. I'm hoping the seal is easier to replace on mine, than it was on yours. It certainly wasn't easy to get out. Mine was binding my shift rod going into forward. Was bound up so bad I had a heck of time getting the cover off.

I had it off already...it wanted to fight me but I won...lol....problem I have with my engine is that the serial numbers are gone...in someones infinite wisdom , the engine i.d. tag is a plastic sticker placed on one of the engine mounting brackets and they fade away or get torn off.
