Im right there with you mine is gone too Im guessing when Im ordering the parts but ive been looking at allthe model numbers that have my style impeller houseing etc and all have the same part numbers so so far they are working! I went to my buddies shop today that works for bent marine in mandeville and he helped me pull the bearing spool out! WASNT EASY!!!! After pulling the threads out of one of the anode holes drilling it tapping it and inserting heli-coil we finally beat the damn thing out! Luckly his shop had the same puller that I needed that was in the book! Now seals and bearing are on order and will be reinstalling hopefully in a week.

Smoke,
I have that controller. There isn't much you can do with it. You will need to do the adjustments at the motor end.

I'm in the process of changing the shift linkage seal on my 1988, I already have the 1 piece rod, and my gear case cover looks different than yours. I'm guessing due to my engine bieng a 1 piece driveshaft, looks like yours is a 2 piece. I'm hoping the seal is easier to replace on mine, than it was on yours. It certainly wasn't easy to get out. Mine was binding my shift rod going into forward. Was bound up so bad I had a heck of time getting the cover off.

Correct I do have the 2 piece and am making it work.... At least trying too. With the one piece pinion shaft you also have the different style water pump houseing, yours should be cast aluminum where mine is a hardend plastic. With the control I didnt tighten the new cable completely inside of it so hopefully when I take it apart I will be able to tighten it up and correct the problem at least a little!

Quick question on the spool. I ordered a new bearing and want to install it when I get it I have never seen a bearing like this before and I am at the point of haveing to fix it, I started to tap it out and its falling apart, how many of yall have dealt with this and can give great adivice? Ive changed plenty of bearing before but am stumpt on this one, do I need to have it pressed in, and can ,and or will a machine shop be able to do this?

I welded on a replacement skeg !.....I am a bit worried about heat damage...I did have it sitting skeg up for the welding and took my time...but had to make several passes on each side...came out nice though...lots of grinding!!! I bought the skeg from iboats...$29.00
You worried about the seals melting? Did you use TIG?

Smoke, lemme know what the part # is and where you found that kit...your lower unit is identical to mine...if the 3M 5200 fails , I'll be looking to replace it as well...by the way ...what did it look like under the seperator plate ? On mine , many of the walls had vanished from corrosion and I had to reform them with JB weld and flat file them ...and that kit would make all of that new again for me

Alright so I know it took a while but parts from boats.net took forever to get in. I installed the lu today and ill tell you what it worked awsome no adjustments required etc!

Could be worse, could be like my 84 Force 85hp, taking it apart to FINALLY realize the lower unit was replaced back in the day with a '89, no wonder none of the gaskets and impeller stuff matched lol

I hear you on the parts. Ordered the seals and the stator same time. The seals from boats.net didn't even ship until a week after I already had the stator! Next time I'll just go to my local guy instead of trying to save a couple bucks. Heck, boats.net told me the one driveshaft seal I needed most was no longer available. Called the local guy and he had one in stock, just $4.00 more than boats.net had it listed for. Just had to cross reference it twice to find the right part.

BTW, ran the boat last night for the first time, and my shift problem is gone. Nice crisp smooth shifts without hardly touching the shifter. :D
