Powerslide, read this thread on another site:

http://www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/showthread.php?17481-115-johnson-tilt-and-trim-not-working

The OP also thought that the 8 was a 3 on the stern bracket tag. If you look at the pic, it does look kind of like a 3. The forum member responding (Joe Reeves) knew that it wasn't a 1973 just by looking at the power tnt unit. Compare your tnt to the pics. If yours is identical, you probably have a 1978.

edit: also note how close your serial number is to his

Re: what did i tear up?

I agree after further review that i have it is a 8 not a 3. My 8 is even less complete than his. And his 0 at the end looks exactly like mine. Its dark now but i will see what my TNT looks like when i get a chance working late shift tomorrow.

My number is 470 off from his

Re: what did i tear up?

ok i am going with it being a 78. i pulled the lower off and replaced impeller. It was intact but had cracks. While i was in i made sure it locked into reverse and forward. So it would appear i dont have a lowerend issue... Everyone agree?

I read somewhere they have a measurement for the shifter rods. Based off 115etl78c what would my shifter measurement in nuetral be? Also where is a good place to pickup a manual? i looked on ebay and didnt see any for a 115. Once i get my measurements and reinstalled if it still doesnt go in reverse how do i adjust the linkage?

Take those measurements with a grain of salt. If I set my shift rod up at 21 27/32" like the book recommends, it will not go into reverse. Mine takes a good two more turns of the shaft out to get it to middle range on the cable adjuster.

If you cant get the reverse to engage with the wheel adjuster all the way out drop the lower and turn the shift rod out two turns. Put it back together and see if you can get it into reverse without the cable linkage connected. You'll have to readjust the cable adjuster to get it in the correct range if it does. It doesnt need to be running to adjust the linkage. You can push on the prop when the engine isnt running to see if its in forward gear, neutral or reverse.

Re: what did i tear up?

ok so i got the LU back on today. I tried to get reverse without the cable linkage and it looks like the shift rod is hitting the motor when trying to go down. I used my foot and spun the prop while pushing down and i can feel the gears touching but it just isnt engaging all the way. Do i just need to screw my shift rod out two turns like you said you think? or anything else i should check?

go to the secret files section, I believe there is shift rod lengths listed. you need to drop the gear case and spin the shift rod till you get it set at the right height.

Check the height. You may have inadvertently screwed the shaft in when you had it out last time. In any case if you are hitting the case now you will have to screw the shaft out at least 2 turns for where it is sitting now. If you are almost hitting reverse now 2 turns out will put you in mid range on the screw adjuster which is right where you want to be. If the height from base to hole center is what it should be then just screw it out two turns anyway. I spent a lot of time agonizing over that factory height setting thing until I realized that for mine it just wasnt true. 21 27/32" Is the factory height setting on 20" shaft models . Mines well into the 28" range.

Re: what did i tear up?

OK so i got it adjusted and back on this morning. I think i almost took it too far now it doesnt go into FWD until the very end of my throw. But my main concern is that my new impeller isnt pumping.... Keep in mind it quit right before i started all this work and when i pulled it apart the impeller was intact just looked old it was cracked and didnt straighten back out. I pulled the plug out of the head to see if it was clogged and it wasnt. I am sure i got the key back in as well. suggestions?

I noticed the LU has 3 holes about a 1/4 in size. w/ the water on it comes out the two in the side well. But the front one it kind of sputters. Should i be worried about that front one?

Re: what did i tear up?

After further reading on other people problems i think i may have a sticking or clogged up thermostat. when i removed the housing i knew i had issues. It is caked in dirt/sand. Doesnt look like its ever been opened up. Add'l questions now... Do i try to clean all this mess out or leave it because it will cause further issues by breaking it loose? Another question when the water goes up into the motor where does it come back out?

appreciate everyone and i think i have about worked through it hoping when i order the new thermostats that will fix the issue!!!

Re: what did i tear up?

water goes out through your exhaust, clean your water passages as much as possible without chipping away the wall. also make sure your water tube lined up into the water pump when you put foot back on.

Re: what did i tear up?

You should also remove head covers and clean water channels on cover and outside head. Then remove heads and in the water jacket are ruber tubes a about 2 in long that Chanel water around pistons. They get flat with time and don't do there job and also could collect debris. Of course you will need to have gasket kits on hand first

Re: what did i tear up?

ok so it doesnt look like anything was clogged up. When i put the new lower metal piece in the impeller setup i didnt inspect it close enough. The kit wasnt a perfect match and my old one had a small indention where part of the case that houses the impeller went into. I thought it looked funny when i bolted it back together the shaft was touching the plastic where the driveshaft comes through. Anyway i put the old metal piece back on with the new impeller and bolted it all back up and hooked up the muffs and it was late so i pulled the plug wires off and cranked it over for a few seconds it pumped water out the tattle-tale. Now i am just waiting on my thermostat kit to get that fixed and hopefully i can get her out on the water.

Again i appreciate everyones help and patience i know you get alot of newbie questions and i am sure you get tired of answering the same ones over and over

Re: what did i tear up?

great job probie..lol

well i wish you were right haha i might be able to open a boat shop after all this....

I got my t-stats in and hooked everything up. Cranked her up and ran it 3-4min the alarm didnt go off and i touched the heads to see if both were cool. The port side was ok i could leave my hand for 4-5sec. the starboard side was so hot i couldnt touch it without pulling back. I shut it off. I have read these have a head cover can someone post a pic or tell me exactly where the bolts that hold this are is supspect i have some build up somewhere on that side.

i ordered a manual but it has not come in and i want to keep moving and hopefully get this deal going by the end of march

Thanks.

Re: what did i tear up?

There are the head covers which have water passages behind them. BUT MOST LIKELY THE WATER DEFLECTOR ON THE HOT SIDE IS BAD AND FLATTENED. You have to remove head to get to it which id no big deal just get gaskets and deflector ahead of time. Cleaning old gasket material is hardest part.
I had this problem w mine and was leery of pulling the heads myself but it was a no brainer.

Re: what did i tear up?

ok well i stumbled through the head cover removal after i checked my mail my manual still hasnt showed.... Used some zip ties and went down as far as i could in the water passages threw it back together. Cranked it back up and still hot on the starboard side pulled the line off that goes from tstat housing to head and i had a decent amount of water. Can anyone tell me if this means that maybe the t-stat i got new is bad? or could it still be the deflector you are referencing?

Its getting water just not enough or the water is sitting in the head and not cooling it....

My initial thought was to swap the t-stats from port to starboard and see if my cooling issue moves with it but man those things were a pain to get installed.
