Re: What did my wife get me into?

flam,

5 qts of each is plenty. 5lbs is too much of the 1/4" CS. I don't recall the offerings from US Comp but like a pound or two should be plenty. Also make sure you have enough glass to overlap the surrounding area well.

Re: What did my wife get me into?

Thanks Greg.

I'm ordering the 38" width for the 1.5oz CSM and the 6oz cloth, as well as double/triple the length I need. I plan on screwing up at least something along the way, so I don't mind over ordering a couple of things. This should give me about 6" of overlap on both sides if needed.

I'll go with the 4lb tub of 1/4" CS - it is only $11.50 from USComp. I'm also going to go with 3G of Resin just to be safe. Gonna use the 435 layup resin.

Re: What did my wife get me into?

For Gelcoating the deck afterwards, would 1 gallon do the whole deck?

Would I need to sand the old part of the deck down to get the gelcoat to stick?

I've read where some people have put sand in the gelcoat to make a non-slip surface. Would that work for the gelcoat? I'm looking at getting USComp Pure White Gelcoat.

What is the Webbing solution they have as well? Does this texture the gelcoat?

It should

Yes. Use 80 grit and then clean well with acetone before application.

You can but if you use a very short nap roller to aply it should leave enough stippling behind to give traction.

Basically

If the gelcoat is the final finish then I believe you will need to add a little wax to it.

Thanks again Greg. I'm ordering wax for the gelcoat so I'll have it.

Re: What did my wife get me into?

First off You need to precoat the marine ply with resin BEFORE you apply the mat. If you do not it will pull all the resin out of your mat and it will NOT adhere properly. Make sure and Pay CLOSE attention to the edges since that's where the water has the best chance of getting in. Since you have that sq. footage 3 gallons should be enuf. I HIGHLY recommend you get one of these...

It helps roll out any air bubbles. Keep some acetone in a Pie Pan to soak it in in between roll outs.

Re: What did my wife get me into?

Thanks Woodonglass - I'm getting a 5" detail roller from USComp. That is the same thing, right?

For the resin prep, do I just coat it with a brush? And I'm guessing I add MEKP into the resin for the precoat of the wood? How much resin do you think it will take to coat the 24x60 piece?

Flam,

Mix up the precoat just like you would for normal glassing. Mix up about a pint at first to see how far it goes. Then adjust up or down from there. You can use anything to apply the resin that can handle the harshness of the resin itself. I always used 6" or 9" solvent resistant shortnap rollers for all of my work. (Foam rollers will fall apart very quickly.) Just keep the roller well moistened with resin so it doesn't redraw resin out of the glass. Also the fiberglass rollers (pic above) can tend to snag on CSM so go slow with it so it doesn't grab the CSM and pull it off the surface. You will see...its really pretty easy.

Re: What did my wife get me into?

Thanks again Greg.

I'm ordering supplies today - should I get a few cheap brushes from them and rollers? They are only sixty cents or so, and I figure that would be the cheapest thing I have in this boat.

Re: What did my wife get me into?

Everything delivers next wednesday. 82lbs in 5 boxes. :)

For the plywood prep, should I rough it up with some sandpaper? If so, what grit? Then I just apply resin with a brush, right? How thick of a coat do I apply?

I know the edges are the most important. Any tips for them? This will be my first glass job, so any tips would be appreciated. I've read quite a bit, but application experience is totally different.

I'll probably start by glassing the flanges just to get a feel for it.

Re: What did my wife get me into?

A quick sanding with 80 grit would NOT hurt. Then Blow off all the dust. As for the initial coat of resin just mix up a pint with hardener and use a 3" Chip brush to brush it on. I would do the edges first. HINT: Make som NAIL strips about 3 ft long out of 1x2 wood stips. Drive about 2 3" finish nails thru the strips and lay the strips on some saw horses. Doing this will allow you to coat BOTH sides of your plywood. Coat one side then flip it over onto the nail points and do the other side. You can apply the 1.5 oz cloth on the underneath side as soon as that side gets dry or still a little Tacky. Coat the wood with resin. Lay the cloth, use your GLOVED hands to press and smooth it into the resin, apply a little more resing and use your brush and the bubble roller to smooth it all out. Make sure to have some, acetone on hand to keep the roller from getting stuck. Take your time, do a Dry Run to figure out what you are gunna do. You only have about 15 - 20 minutes before it will start to gel.

Yes start with a small batch and get used to working the glass,or really the resin it what your working....you kind of push the resin over the top of the glass and not drag the glass.
I found a small roller 1" dia. at Home Depot and used that to smooth out air bubbles and top coat resin. It worked out ok.

Re: What did my wife get me into?

Wow... I'm reading all of tis information thinking i came to the right place. I don't mean to hijack a thread but i'm getting ready to do a floor repair on my 1995 Crownline 210 CCR for the same issue... rotted out under the captains chair. Fortunately for me, my deck was all plywood with a thin coat of glass over it then carpeted over the entire deck. I hate carpet!!! What can i use for paint once i get the new deck installed and glassed. I want something anti-skid since i'm not putting carpet back in.
Again, sorry to hi-jack the post.

Got all the supplies in from US Composites today.

Now I just need to prep the deck out and then start glassing if the weather ever gets warm again!

Madd,

You really should start your own thread on this or ask your question under one of your other threads. Quick answer to your question is search the forum. There are many options and they have all been discussed here before. Thanks.

Re: What did my wife get me into?

So I'm prepping the deck and am curious how far I need to sand the deck down? Should I hit fiberglass? I was thinking of hitting about 4-6" around the hole - except by the edge where I don't have 4" - only about 2" or so.

I'm also planning to put down a new coat of gel coat on the deck so my patch doesn't show. Can I just sand down the textured top and then lay over the top of that after I clean it up with some acetone?

What do you think?

Re: What did my wife get me into?

6" around the patch should be fine.
I would say the gel coat needs to be sanded down so the wax that cures it is off the surface so the new gel sticks properly
If you only hit the textured top you may leave some wax in the dimples and not bond well. Acetone is a must before you coat.
