I just watched the band heart perform live on dancing with the stars...Ann Wilson did awesome, but it got me thinking. The vocalists of the yesteryears are far more talented then the digitally enhanced vocalists of today. I mean seriously.... Has anybody listened to some of todays vocalists live.... They are horrible, almost laughable... Where as the yesteryear vocalists can still come out and nail it.... And it actually sounds like it does on the album.

Maybe I'm crazy, I don't know, what you guys think?

I agree that some of the singers have it a lot easier now than the old school days... but don't bash them all, some performers like Carrie Underwood are the real deal! :)

Sorry I didn't mean to sound bashing...I do realize there are some that got it.... I'm talking about the majority here...

I have to agree.. they are still out there..

Carrie is a good example.. this is video is amazing to me.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYBzwRq5ZTg

Ever hear of the Zac Brown Band?? Check out this performance of Devil Went down to GA.. It is really good..

Justin Timberlake, while not a following fan, is very talented.

Black eyed Peas with Fergie will be a classic..

But I do agree with the sentiment that there is a lot of manufactured crap out there.

They say to make it you need talent and ambition? Pssssshhhhh!

Ever heard of 50 cent or lil wayne?

But, take Taylor Swift.

Beautiful girl, great voice, great song writer, and worked for what she wanted.

unlike Beyonce and Miley Cyrus who's dad just hooked it up.

I'm guessing people who can actually think don't like lil wayne too much.

Re: what ever happened to true talent?

being a former music director (the guy that pics the music that is played on the air) for 3 radio stations, i can say talent is still out there.

however.....years ago....you had to be able to sing. if you could.....and you had good writers....you could get your one song played on the radio....if it was good....you got a hit.

but then albums came in......that means you could not just have one good song.....you needed at least three (or 2 and an ok one) to get played......this is when talent really came to the forefront....wow we saw great bands.....fleetwood mac. neil diamond..eagles..pink floyd.....unbeleavable tallent.

then came the music video..........whole new world.
this industry grew by leaps and bounds.they experimented with it in the eightys and by the nintys..one artist, saw it and saw a whole new medium.........madonna.
she had talent....could dance.....sing....and had great writers as well as producers in shep pettybone....(a ny dj/producer)....she turned the music industry in a totally different direction

even though she had fantastic talent, she started the idea on video that if you were sexy and had an ok song you could make it big.

hence...we lost our talent.....the producers decided we needed good looking people on the videos...we could enhance the voice thru reverb....processing and a multitude of other ways but to sell the video....you needed to be sexy and look good.

this is about when "new country" came to hit it big.....dan seals "bop" huge crossover song.....took the music lovers and went to country.....while we rockers......got lost during the eightys and early nintys.

even tho today....we still see some resurgance of rock...it is still how you look on video.....hence....the talent takes a back step.

the current hip hop/dance music is a trend that will continue....however more and more younger teens are turning to the classic rock sound as an alternative to gangster rap.

we still have good talent.......christina agulerra...pink. carrie underwood..i personally like cherryl crow for fun music....are great artists.

but untill the industry starts to make money another way......talent will take a back seat to a good looking person that is highly vocally processed on a video.

Please, I heard the Black Eyed Peas sing live on American Idol last year. I had to fast forward through the DVR programming. Those fools couldn't sign their songs live like they sound on the radio if their life depended on it.

Ever heard of 50 cent or lil wayne?

Ever heard lil wayne actually sing? He'd have to get one of those voice boxes for throat cancer survivors in order to sing his songs live.

Beyonce and Leona Lewis still have it. Leona hit it out of the park at the China olympics finale.

I have to agree with the OP that there is a very high percentage of non-talented singers these days. The recording studio and digitized music have made some real toads famous.

Re: what ever happened to true talent?

The good ones last, the bad are forgotten about. Ever heard Dave Matthews Band. I'm not that big of a fan but that guy is better live than on an album.

I'm sure there were plenty of bad singers in any generation. We only remember the good ones so it seems like they were all good back in the day.

If anything I would argue that the music today is less dependent on the vocals. Songs about strippers and rims etc... There are just so many bad singers getting by on pop culture and whats trendy right now. In 20 years we will only remember the people of today that had actual talent!!

Re: what ever happened to true talent?

While there are elements of truth in what you describe, don't kid yourself about manipulation in regard to vocal quality, when comes to "yesterday's artists."

There's lots of garbage being pumped out today, but there was a lot of "trickery" going on back in the day too. You might be surprised what can be done in even a live concert performance, with a mixing board and some outboard gear. Pump the mids and slap some "verb" on things and suddenly a pretty thin sound can be very different.

A couple of Yamaha PM4000 boards (Front of House & Monitor), some outboard gear, about 50,000 watts worth of amps, some EAW mains & subs, some midfields on delays, and all of a sudden your hair is lookin' about like your dogs ears, when he's hangin his head out the window of your pickup at 65 mph!

Can you say ROCK & ROLL! :D

BTW, don't get too impressed by some of the "unplugged" shows either - lots of what goes on is still manipulated and its a long way from unplugged.

Randy Jackson was talking about playing in Journey. He said Steve Perry could sing the phone book and make it sound good.

Yup, Steve Perry was in a class all by himself. That said, if you want to have some fun, get on youtube and listen to Arnel Pineda with Journey. He doesn't sound exactly like Steve Perry, but he's very close.

He's a guy from the Phillipines, who was discovered by Journey, because he had been doing covers of their songs and had posted some of them on youtube.

Re: what ever happened to true talent?

Vegasphotoman and I hung out on Freemont street in Vegas and talked to Escape - The Journey tribute band. They put on a pretty good show later that night.

I just watched a whole group of kids at a junior high school singing along to Journey songs last week in the hallway at the school. It stands the test of time...
