Re: what ever happened to true talent?
being a former music director (the guy that pics the music that is played on the air) for 3 radio stations, i can say talent is still out there.
however.....years ago....you had to be able to sing. if you could.....and you had good writers....you could get your one song played on the radio....if it was good....you got a hit.
but then albums came in......that means you could not just have one good song.....you needed at least three (or 2 and an ok one) to get played......this is when talent really came to the forefront....wow we saw great bands.....fleetwood mac. neil diamond..eagles..pink floyd.....unbeleavable tallent.
then came the music video..........whole new world.
this industry grew by leaps and bounds.they experimented with it in the eightys and by the nintys..one artist, saw it and saw a whole new medium.........madonna.
she had talent....could dance.....sing....and had great writers as well as producers in shep pettybone....(a ny dj/producer)....she turned the music industry in a totally different direction
even though she had fantastic talent, she started the idea on video that if you were sexy and had an ok song you could make it big.
hence...we lost our talent.....the producers decided we needed good looking people on the videos...we could enhance the voice thru reverb....processing and a multitude of other ways but to sell the video....you needed to be sexy and look good.
this is about when "new country" came to hit it big.....dan seals "bop" huge crossover song.....took the music lovers and went to country.....while we rockers......got lost during the eightys and early nintys.
even tho today....we still see some resurgance of rock...it is still how you look on video.....hence....the talent takes a back step.
the current hip hop/dance music is a trend that will continue....however more and more younger teens are turning to the classic rock sound as an alternative to gangster rap.
we still have good talent.......christina agulerra...pink. carrie underwood..i personally like cherryl crow for fun music....are great artists.
but untill the industry starts to make money another way......talent will take a back seat to a good looking person that is highly vocally processed on a video.
