What have I done to my 1966 fd-20c?

The motor has frozen up since I last tried to get it started. Took off recoil starter and it pulls fine. Wouldn't start last time but would pull and try to start. Now, it won't pull at all. What can I do to diagnose the problem? I'm guessing the pistons are frozen so I have sprayed wd40 into the spark plug holes and left the motor laying on it's side. Appreciate your help. I'm a lost ball in the high weeds.

Not much doubt, your motor was ingesting water into the cylinders the last time you ran it. The water has caused rust while in storage. Your task now is to determine the extent of the damage and decide whether or not you still have anything left to fix. Possibly not. You will have to do a certain amount of tear down and inspection to see.

And, needless to say, locate and fix the leak

Get some ATF and Acetone and mix them 50:50. Try that rather than WD-40. If you get it broke loose see if you can get it running and then find out where the water is coming from.

Never heard of that mix....does it work well?

Read about it maybe a yr ago on a post here. Before that I always used ATF and OMC Engine tuner to to break a stuck mtr loose. Patience is the key word when doing this and rocking the flywheel back and forth. And don't use the flywheel nut to do this. Get a strap wrench for the flywheel.

I suggest that you remove the lower unit first to determine if the lock up is with the powerhead or the lower unit.

Trying to get an AD-10 up and running. Bought 2 of them, one with a seized head, 1 with a hole in the block. Been soaking the head in wd40, and rocking a wrench on the shaft, but just went downstairs and mixed up a batch of the atf and acetone. Fingers crossed.

BTW....sorry about the hijack, got sidetracked.

Thanks to all of y'all. Could this have stemmed from me having the wated too deep in the can I was using when it was ingesting water?
If I did remove the lower unit to see if it's the LU or the powerhead, how would I know? What are the indicators?
The sticky that Rick suggested said to use TCW-3 oil which I think is available at walmart. Is the 50:50 mix you guys suggest substantially better?
Most importantly, other than not doing a good job of buying a good motor or at least going through it before I did all of this...did I cause this damage by doing something wrong?
Thanks again, guys.

If you removed the lower unit, and the cylinders freed up, your issue is in your gearcase and not your powerhead. If after removing the gearcase the cylinders are still frozen, your powerhead is the issue.

not due to a high water level in the test barrel. How long was it sitting for unused? Not fogged Id assume?

it probably set for about two weeks. what does "fogged" mean?
also, in your opinion, how difficult is it to remove the lower unit and get it back together?

Fogging is spraying an oil into the cylinders when storing for a period of time or when winterizing, but yours was only a 2 week period.

What were you running your fuel mix at? Was it new fuel/oil?

Dropping the lower unit for testing is not difficult at all. An OEM Service Manual might be a good idea for your first time, it will also pay for itself many times over in the future. Check ebay for a used one, or outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint.

I used a 50:1 mix with new mid-grade gas. I'm kind of frustrated because I bought the book "Cheap Outboards" and really want to get this one up and running. I'll look for the service manual. Sincerely appreciate you educating me, Chris. Reckon this one still has life in it? Oh yeah, where do you find atf and acetone?

Just got back from Auto Zone getting the stuff...heading to the river to try the ATF and Acetone mix. I'll be back tonight with questions, I'm sure. thanks.

Took the LU off as suggested above to eliminate it as a problem. Once off, it turned fine by hand either "in gear"or out of gear. The flywheel is still frozen stiff. I laid the motor on it's side and poured the 50:50 mix of ATF and Acetone into the spark plug holes but hasn't touched it as of yet. I figure i'll wait a couple of days and go back down to check it out. What I can't get over is that it was turning over just fine and now it's frozen tight as ****'s hat band. what gives? what caused it? what did i do wrong to ensure I don't do it in the future? Also, could it be something simple that i'm overlooking? I mean the flywheel doesn't budge. thanks.

It could be something under the flywheel broke loose and locked it up, but try your mix in the cyl's first.

When I left it and the motor would turn over, I did break the handle off the pull rope. I rigged it back together and continued to try and get it to start. I wonder if the recoil starter returning so fast could have caused some sort of breakage under the flywheel. I presume you're talking about a broken coil or something like that interfering with the rotation of the flywheel, right? That would make more since to me since the flywheel is literally fixed in place with no rotation at all. I'll do as you suggest first and see if it loosens up at all. Thanks.
