So I took the 83 Galaxie with 3.0 OMC sterndrive to the shop, now mind you I had it on the lake for about 5 hours, but combination of dirty fuel, old fuel whatever, took it to shop to get the carb rebuilt and to get it running again. The guy rebuilds the carb and now the boat wont run, says the compression checks as follows #1 150,#2 40,#3 40 and # 4 150. Says that either head gasket or bad valves is culprit, says the boats not worth the repairs and to come and get it. SO I guess my ? is what on and 83 Galaxie 3.0 with OMC Stringer is worth selling or should I just sink the whole damn thing?

So with that in mind what would l look for the same motor,or what would actuall fit the OMC Stringer outdrive?

With the compression like that on those cylinders I'd look at maybe trying to do a head gasket myself. Probably popped from bad gas and detonation.

Folks, if you take your boat to a mechanic because of engine problems insist a compression test be done before any other work and the results recorded for your records. It might cost $25 (in a $100 an hour shop) but it is well worth it if for no other reason than you establish a base line that can be compared in the future.

Ditto - this is very valuable information, not just for current condition, but over time you will have a record that can give you a heads up on impending doom

A head gasket is not that hard of a job to do on a 3.0L. I have done a few, total labor time was about 5 hours and that was sending the head out to be checked.

Yeah Man,

Get a manual and read the section on the heads removal , dissasembly and reassembly.

With that info, and the help that can be found on these iBoat forums, you can tame that sucker. Or at least look back and say that you tried.

You would be able to tell if the gasket was smoked, or rings or walls or whatever.

Good Luck

Yes I am running far far away from it should have run when I seen it!! This was my first boat and if I keep this one and try to fix it I may end up never boating again and as I enjoyed the trip I did take in it I would really rather bail on this one before I am through with the whole boating thing.

16' galaxie 4 cyl junk w/omc and needs a lot of work ( only 3 seats) and a sagging floor over fuel cell or 19' Bayliner all new interior newly rebuilt v8 that gives me room to grow before upgrading I do believe there are more pros than cons. The OMC was not the deciding factor. Should have thought more in the beginning,at the end ofthe 2000.00 in parts and labor I still would have a boat that I will outgrow and never get the money back out of.

Wise man, you're thinking is right on track!:D

My writing was more of a funny, the faces were picked for the people still posting on this thread, thinking you are still going to fix this boat.
For future refrence, let the guys know when you are no longer pursuing something.

That way, we can all focus on the next endeavor:D:D:D

Good luck with the new to you boat.

Re: What in the !@#@!

I am still confused by his $$ deals. "the guy gave me $500 and took $500?

How was this not an even trade and did any money change hands?

Sounds like a used car salesman was involved in the deal.
