The resin if exposed to water will absorb it, and it will transfer water to any substrate below it like wood, and then it will rot. All resins need to be sealed against water.

Older alum boats are much better than old fiberglass, just because polyester resin absorbs water over time and the older fibergass boats often if not kept very dry will be very heavy and water logged.

 Seriously?

The 221 Starcraft Islander has a repuation of being a pretty good big lake boat.
I'll let you know for sure when I take mine out for its maiden run:)

Had one and used it on lake erie.It will pound you to death when the waves start getting big

It works great. I just have a chance to buy a 19 ft Carolina Skiff DXL at a very low price. In great condition. I would like a bigger boat because I can take my grand kids along. I understand that the SKIFF is a good lake boat. If I buy it, I can sell my Hydra for $2000, if anyone is interested. The motor has about 150 hours based on the information from the last owner., It works well, even though it is an old boat.

Thanks all again.... great advise.

grab that carolina skiff immediately. Great boat for taking a crew of young-uns (like 10 of them) fishing. Safe, stable and maintenance free. If you don't liek it you can sell it instantly. no brainer.

It's got to be true. I read it on the internet.

Meanwhile, over at the marina, all fiberglass boats over 25 years old are on the bottom.

Jeez.

I won't ever be on lake erie but I have had the chance to ride on a Chieftan and 22ft Islander on lake winnipeg. Big wind and big waves made for an interesting weekend but I thought the boats rode just fine. Maybe the operater knew how to handle these in rough water.

I thought once dry the resin was waterproof?
