What is my boat supposed to weight?

I have a 89 Sea Ray 23' weekender. I weighed it before I put it in the water for the first time this year and boat and trailer weighed in at 6400 lbs. I figure the trailer weighs about 1200 so that means the boat weighs 5200. I am wondering where I would find what the boat is supposed to weigh? I am thinking it may be water logged.

That's what I thought but was hoping it was wrong. What could I be looking at? The floors are solid and I can't find any soft spots. Do you think it could just be the foam is soaked? Before I bought the boat (this is my third summer) the bottom had been sand blasted to remove the bottom paint. It had been used in salt water, and no longer is. But before I started using it I painted the bottom with a 2-part epoxy anti-fouling paint. I also sanded it down this winter and filled some gouges and painted with a 2-part epoxy paint. I guess I am wondering what would be the chance of just having to remove floor and foam to put new in?? Any thoughts....

Was there fuel in the boat when weighed?, fresh water hold?, anchor and chain?, cases of beer?, ect ;)

Gas is 6lbs per us gallon..I add 900 lbs to mine with just a full tank.

haha GWP, beat ya!, but yer still way ahead of me on your build. ;)

It had about a half a tank of fuel which is 25 gallons, 2 anchors, batt, life jackets but no beer! I figure all the extras weights maybe 400 lbs. Stupid question here does that 4060 include the motor and out drive?

Oh I thought all boats had foam. Good to know. Do you think I have an issue based on the weight?

Really need to know how much the trailer weighs. Also, did you weigh while the trailer was attach to a tow vehicle?

On an I/O boat, it includes the engine and drive, minus their fluids. Im not sure of the cutoff size where foam was required. My 28' has no foam.

Bummer about the beer......

I will check the plate on the trailer on Sat. The boat was disconnected from the tow vehicle when it was weighed.

I agree zool!

Whether or not you have a "problem" is going to depend on whether the wood in the transom and stringers is waterlogged. I'm not sure weighing is going to give you a true answer here; probably better to have that checked out if you think you do have a problem.

I can tell you this:

My last boat I weighed within a couple of weeks of purchase (brand new boat). It actually weighed about 400 lbs more than the manufacturer stated.

Boats tend to collect water over time and get heavier. Doesn't necessarily mean the boat is rotting from the inside out; gelcoat isn't waterproof and so water gets to (and in) the boat whether you want it to or not. So long as it doesn't get to the wood you're probably okay. The only real answer here is a tinny. ;)

Whether both of these would add up to over 1,000 lbs, barring any water logged components, may not be outside the realm of possibility. I wouldn't panic just yet.

That is good to hear. I will get the weight of the trailer and go from there.

Your boats US Coast Guard capacity plate should tell you if the boat has flotation. Here is a photo of mine.

Level flotation

image.jpgThe trailer doesn't give a laden weight either does the title. How else could I figure the trailer weight? I also looked at the boat placard and it says basic flotation. What is does that mean?image.jpg

Your boat/trailer weighs 6400 lbs. The trailer is rated at 5650 GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating). So you are over the limit by 750 lbs. GVWR includes the trailer and all that is carried on it.

Yeah I realize it, the boat is not supposed to weigh as much as it does. Just not sure what is causing it to weigh so much.

No matter what you do I don't think you are going to get rid of 750 lbs - I am suprised that you have not had trailer issues yet, What are the tires rated for? (weight)
