What is so unique about an exhaust bellows

On my 1976 3.0L the exhaust bellows in the engine compartment were fried. I couldn't find one quick enough and wanted to take my new boat out, so I made one out of rubber PVC couplings. I took a little to get them in there but I did it and it seems to work fine. Just wondering why a new bellows cost so much and what makes them special. They don't get hot because water is running through them and the one I made don't leak so it should work right?

They fit just right and keep your boat from sinking if they fail :D

assumin it's a mercruiser, if it's exhust bellows were talkin, the bottom one, yer fix is most likely just dandy. the exhust is filled with water anyways when yer static up to water level. if were talkin main drive bellows, the top one. yer treadin on thin ice as that one must be sealed or like noted above, ya sink......

ziggy, I think he is refering to the exhaust hoses inside the boat that connect the exhaust risers to the exhaust tube that goes down to the transom shield.

Those exhaust hoses are usually reinforced a lot more than those PVC couplers. The reason your hose was burned up was because of a lack of water. Did you fix the real problem (low water flow) or just patch up the result of the problem (burnt exhaust hose).

Yes I did fix the main problem which was the lower unit impeller. And you are correct about the bellows. I fixed the one that goes from the exhaust manifold to the transom plate. Thanks
