Wood, thanks so much for the info. You really do put out some good tips out. I went and looked at that compressor at the muffler shop this morning. I really liked it. It will produce 13.5 CFMs at 175 PSI. That should do the trick. I also looked at that one on CL in Hernando, MS for $500.00, but I looked at one on line at Sears that puts out 11.3 CFMs at 90 PSI and it was only $599.00 brand new. It was also a 60 gal. The one at the muffler shop is an 80 gal and it has never been used. I think that one is in my futrue. Thanks again. Ed Bell

Watermann, you work quicker than I do. I've not even completed stripping the outside and I have more than 14 hours in mine, but without a buddy. Best I can count, I have 6 coats. One or two may be some primers. It takes about 3 or 4 applications of the KleanStrip and scraping to get to my alluminum. I am not going to take any of the paint off of the inside. Here are a few more pictures. Ed Bell

Don't forget to leak test that boat after you get all of the paint stripped off and before you start putting new paint on it.

Thanks Jigs. That will be my next move. Is 3M 5200 and some new rivets the best fix and product out there for fixing leaks? Ed Bell

I really like the lines of your little tinny, there's something about the older boats and their shape.

For an old 60 year old, she is still in pretty good shape. I may not be saying that after I get some water in her. I have gone through a gallon of aircraft stripper, a bottle of citrustriper and about another quart of Rustolum Stripper and still have one pannel to go. I bough another quart of stripper today just exactly like the last gallon I bought. But, for some reason, today when I used it, I thought that I had gotten a hold of the wrong stripper because it didn't seem to work at all. The weather here was in the 40s with a light mist. Those conditions must not let the stripper work at all. BTW your Sea Nymph has some of the same lines. I also saw an old Sears boat here on iboat that looks a lot like my Arkansas Travelr.

Gluvit works awesome. First buck the rivets and/or replace any that need replacing. Then Gluvit the inside. Should be leak free. Then vinegar and water wash, prime and paint.

Thanks Don. Sounds like a plan. Gluvit will be my next purchase. First tell me what you mean by "buck the rivets". I suppose that means hammer them together somehow. Will I need some type of rivet blaster and is that a two man operation since I can't be on both top and bottom of the boat at the same time? I did just purchase one of those two handed blind rivet guns. My little one hand rivet gun will not take a 1/4 inch rivet. Thanks again for your help. Ed Bell

Bucking rivets IS a 2 man job. Sledge hammer on the back side and a ball pein hammer on the inside. The Blind rivet gun, from what I've heard is a much better unit.

I 2nd that, and with some 5200 in with the blind rivet, they won't weep let alone leak.

Might check thru these threads before you use sand for blasting an aluminum hull:

anyone try sand blasting an aluminum boat?

sand blasting aluminum hull?

Sandblasting paint from aluminum - HELP

And from another site

Soda blasting has been done recently w/ good success. Glass & walnut are less aggressive then sand, but I don't have any info that suggests their use or to avoid them.

Many (most?) skip blasting & strip because it's cheaper & can be done DIY.

Please do NOT blast your aluminum boat. I've never owned one but... ALL my research and knowledge gained from here on the forum has led me to believe that it is NOT a good idea.

But... Your Boat...Your Choice!!!;)

Does anyone know if they make that 5200 in an aluminum color? I looked on the internet and all I saw was white? If I leave my boat natural, I would like aluminum in color? Ed Bell

Nope but.. You can clean it off with acetone before it cures, or paint it after it does..

I guess I'm lucky that I could never get my blaster to work properly. Not enough volume. I did blast a small portion on the back side of the boat and it does pit it up pretty good and it was with extra fine sand. However, the wire brush did buff it out okay. Looks like we are in for a Lion for the begining of March, so it may be toward the end of March before I can make any more real progress. Light flurries of snow this evening. Ed Bell
