OK, I won't.

Have a quart of the VP stuff on order. Should have it by the end of the week.

Just use any good marine type gear oil. Many of us like Mercury HP gear lubricant but there's others.....

Why are you "topping" it off?

If you are changing the gear oil, you MUST fill it in accordance with the applicable OMC service manual.

If you don't, you'll be replacing the drive.

He would probably be better off to NOT use an OMC manual on his Volvo :p :p ;)

To the original poster, you never want to mix types of oil, period.

On both the engine and the out drive, I am guessing that the dealer previous owner took it to for oil change either rounded down to the nearest quart, or just shorted him to save a little money. Engine was a half qt low, and about 1/4" shy of the top of the dipstick on outdrive.

Both are likely within safe limits, but just a touch lower than optimal.

Oil was swapped just prior to my purchase, new bellows, all that yearly maintenance stuff recently completed for the sale.

I hate it when I mix these posts up!!

I'm with Don, if you don't know what they put in it, either find out, get them to "top" it off, or change it yourself.

IF you know someone that sells AMSOIL, they have a synthetic Marine type gear oil too......I would use the Mercury HP.

Mobil 1 makes a GL-5 rated synthetic gear oil you can buy at any AZ or ADV, or Wally World for less than that. Comes in a silver quart jug. Use it in car rear ends alot.

The prices would be similar, within a few cents, at any of the autoparts stores. I used to work at three different ones back while in school. And it is a constant supply product, meaning it will always be available.

Bond-O...what are you using it IN?

Is it a Volvo?

When I do a fluid swap, I will definitely find something cheaper. I used Mystik oils in my Seadoo Jet boat. It cost $14 per gallon compared to BRP's $90 per gallon!!! Just as good, if not better. And MADE IN HOUSTON!

Not trying to jack bondo's answer :D Mystik is whats known as a Main Line producer. Several companies buy their basic refined oil from them, and add a few compounds to it (that usually have little to no effect on the oil's viscosity or longevity) and repackage as their own. NOTHING wrong with Mystik oil! Same with Mobil...they are the pioneers of synthetic oil technology, and sell their basic formula to MANY of the others. Almost guranteed that V-P buys and repackages from them, as V-P does not have a refinery or a synthetic oil lab. Same with BRP...wehn I had my 'Doos, I always used QuikSilver. As long as it meets the stated requirements, you can interchange...and even mix...oil brands. Now, I would not mix Syn with Dino, unless I had no choice, but mixing V-P with Mobil will be just fine. Like I said...they are very likely the same stuff to begin with.

Oh...I have mixed synth with dino on the seadoos before. ONCE! Dealer said "use BRP mineral." Book and previous owner used BRP synthetic.

This is what happened...

Those are NOT leaves in my oil tank, and that is NOT jello in my oil lines!!!

YES!!! That is the wife's new kitchen sink I am cleaning my nasty oil sludge off in...:D

I am damned lucky I caught the lack of oil consumption before I froze up that 787 2-stroke engine. Still runs strong, and pulls me up on wakeboard and strap-on surfboard, and jumps the HELL off of the waves at the beach. Four years later....

+1 on the oily parts in the sink...or the bath tub...been there too. Yeah...syn and dino dont mix too well. Not without a third additive that makes them miscible. Then it effectively becomes a syn-blend.

What is the third additive? Acetone? Lacquer Thinner? Male wolf urine?
