Jeff just to help a little with what oops is talking about above ^^^^^

I've got a tri-hull (18' and pretty heavy) and it's a gem on the inland lakes. When the water gets rough, you can get a rough ride out of them - but not necessarily that much rougher. Mines a little deeper in the center sponson, so it takes chop rather well but admittedly not like a V hull. I would be very confident to take mine most places a V of similar size and structure would go - but I know in the rougher water the V would have a smoother ride.

i actually began my search looking for a tri hull then was talked out of it but may be easily talked back into it :) im not going to be picky, my budget means a lot of compromising is in order so if i dont have an ocean going boat then i wont go out into the ocean, ill use it in the bay, thanks again for the advice ive learnt a lot! the 19' is nice but too big, my storage again is quite limited, any thoughts on this little guy? looks like a decent year end clear our.. if its running ..decent? thanks!

That's similar to a boat that I used to own. PO on that boat used to take her out on Lake Huron to fish (she had down rigger slots in the stern). I don't know how far out he ever went, and the ocean and great lakes are not a like-for-like exchange - but Huron is still "bigger water."

That boat looks nice if the photo is remotely current.

Cruise around where? In the ocean/bays? Madness - that thing will swamp in no time, or pound you if you don't sink.

A 12' boat in the bay feels reeeaaal small. Even the wake of passing powerboats (and there are tons of them around here as you know) will cause a great pucker factor.

For small freshwater it would be fine, but I wouldn't take into the Fraser or Pitt.

Why not look for an old 13' whaler? You can always add a rebuilt motor. At least you'd be a lot safer in the coastal areas. At that size and price, an inflatable would also be a good choice. Seabright in Nova Scotia has good inflatables for good prices.

Considering what's been said. Maybe I go for something like this to cruise around in and do some fishing. It would e nice to have a more recent an reliable motor opposed to some of the other boats in this price range I've been considering.

A very good way i have found to purchase a boat for a deal is to go old school. Call around to the small boat dealers who have mechanic shops. I got my last deal like this. Here is how it went. Original owner had fallen behind on maintenance brought it in. Told it needed 3k in repairs to be perfect again. They sold him a new one.
Owner took the repair estimate off of blue book and i got a great deal. I did a few hundred worth of repairs myself, parts only, and i have a great boat that i could more than double my money on.
Point being I think a lot of great deals sell by word of mouth and never make it to c/l or boat trader. Something to think about. If you let people know you are looking, they will come.

Also keep in mind anytime you look at a boat, even if it is double your budget, hand them your name and number clearly written with the words " I have cash". Tell them you don't want to insult them but if they get desperate you have cash.
I have bought a few cars this way. Its amazing what a difference a couple weeks makes to someone who is trying to raise funds for something.
