i have a 1983 470 merc 170hp i heard many names for my outdrive i think i got a Gen 1 but i read that's not the true name some said it was called a MC 1 the reason i'm asking is i plan to rebuild my outdrive(new impeller, bellows, and so on)and rebuild the 470 motor the motor name is obvious, the motor model number (i'm not sure if it's serial number) is 6325071 the tag on the outdrive now there is two sets of numbers on the left it says 1 84R on the right side it says 6325071 the same as motor?
so what exactly do i call this outdrive so i get the proper parts

Yeah, I screwed that one up for sure, guess that's what happens when you try to type out a reply and listen to something on TV at the same time.

You do have the R drive, and your SN falls into that range.

Your engine serial number would/should have been 06283569 Model number 04707333 MERCRUISER 470 when sold new.

Your drive serial number is 06325071 Model number 01846013 and considered a MERCRUISER MC1 1.84:1 when new, But the drive turned into an R drive (redesign) in Don's link due to the serial number range is the way I understood it. Don would that be the correct way to say it? Thanks.:)

Sorry for the confusion.

Normally when a boat is sold and registered with Mercruiser marine the selling dealer (if doing their job thoroughly) will register the engine, Transom assembly & stern drive serial numbers.

In some cases having one of those serial numbers a mercruiser dealer could look up one of the numbers to find any other serial number/s that the selling dealer would have registered with Mercruiser marine.

So using the drive serial number you posted shows your engine should have been a MERCRUISER 470 when sold new, And the engine serial number would have actually been 06283569 when sold new. You would never have had one serial number to cover all three components of a complete I/O engine package.

If the engine block is still original than you might/should be able to find a metal tag on the engine block &/or another sticker on top of the engine somewhere with the engine serial number on it.

So to me it appears that someone was trying to do their job correctly :) because at some point in time it seems someone put the stern drive serial number sticker on your engine when they were installing the new stern drive that would have come in a separate box from the engine. That would be why the number you posted is accually your stern drive serial number not your engine serial number. Hope this helps.:)

ok your saying that the motor tag that i found with the same serial number as the outdrive tag is not the serial number for the motor so i should look for another tag is this correct?
