The Fuel is eating the hoses apart... I clean the tank with bleach and water. I was able to inspect the hoses and fittings. The hoses are barely together; the fuel is eating this up alive. IMG_0766[1].jpg

From the two pics above, it looks like you can pull the tank. How much fuel is in the tank? Wonder what's under it? With all the goop gone I can see the dedicated ground lug so the tank is grounded. You hoses are junk. Wow.

3/4 of a tank..
Im gonna replace hoses and add a racor 320 fuel & water separator. I couldn't find any size rating for the hoses are they standard?
If so what size? fuel nozzle to tank and from tank to motor

ive seen goo like that on several boats fuel tanks before, but never nearly that much. its possible your tank may still be useable, i would do like you are saying and replace all the hoses, and then use your squeeze ball and take a fuel sample. The sender should pick up pretty low in the tank so if there is water or anythign bad you should see it. If you ahve something clear to pump the fuel into, it helps. If everything looks good just put a new racor on there and you should be ok for a while. I just hope your tank isnt too rotten and leaking somewhere.

as far as gettting new hoses, just bring some pieces of your old lines with you, the vent is usually 5/8" i believe, and the fill is 1 1/2", the line to you motor will depend on the motor hp, im guessing 3/8" if you have a 80 gallon tank. But like i said, dont take my word, bring the old stuff with you to make sure you are getting the right sizes. and obviously replace all the clamps with new ones, and double clamp!

I'm no chemist, but I don't think gasoline is causing that (if it was, we'd ALL have goo for gas lines!)...

for one thing, most fuel lines like that (in my experience anyway) turn hard and brittle, yours is the exact opposite. Could be something that's been added TO the gasoline that's caused it... but..?

I have recently been looking into purchasing 2 part expanding foam as is used in many boats. Every site that sells this stuff says it is impervious to fuel/chemicals when cured. If any of that is melted foam from gasoline then I may need to rethink my plans.

The expanding urethane foam is fuel and chemical resistant, the pink and blue sheet foam is not and will melt to goo if fuel gets on it.

YJS,

You should consider draining and removing that tank, cleaning it up and painting it with a self etching primer at least. Aluminum tanks do have a limited life span and you can extend it by painting your tank.

Neglecting your aluminum fuel tank can be a recipe for disaster.

You should read this:

Re: What is this growing on my fuel tank !!!

...I recently got the boat painted /gelcoated. about 7 months ago.

I'm wondering if it might be from the use of solvents or something like it while preping the boat for paint...
Or something from the paint itself... a heavy consentration of vapors may have been traped below?
Those hoses look like they have been disolved from the outside, and not from the fuel within.
If so it would be something to consider watching for when we refinish our boats.
