Ukcat,<br /><br />Mercs don't have a VRO, they have a standard fuel pump, an engine driven oil pump and a 2psi check valve. The oil is pushed into the fuel line before the fuel pump, through the check valve. The check valve is there to stop fuel running into the oil pump.<br /><br />I have put a couple of pictures from the parts manual.
IF your engine is carbed then a complete oil pump and fuel pump should be any more than about 250. Also if the repair guy is referring to it as a VRO, then it could be prudent to seek a second opinion.<br /><br />In the first pic, the oil pump assembly is item #17, in the second pic, the check valve is item #4 and item #5 is the line that goes to the oil pump. The shaded item above #6 is the fuel pump.
