Re: WHAT IS VRO

VRO is found on Johnson and Evinrude outboards. It's a fuel pump that takes fuel from the fuel tank and mixes it with oil from a reseviuor(sp) mounted somewhere in the boat. The original VRO system was notorious for failing and feeding an engine with un-oiled fuel, ouch!

Chris...............

Re: WHAT IS VRO

ukcat,
Need more info ie: serial #, is engine carburated?etc. in order to say whether this price is in line. A new pump for carbed engine will only run around $125 usd. If you can install yourself.....

Re: WHAT IS VRO

Ukcat,

Mercs don't have a VRO, they have a standard fuel pump, an engine driven oil pump and a 2psi check valve. The oil is pushed into the fuel line before the fuel pump, through the check valve. The check valve is there to stop fuel running into the oil pump.

I have put a couple of pictures from the parts manual. IF your engine is carbed then a complete oil pump and fuel pump should be any more than about 250. Also if the repair guy is referring to it as a VRO, then it could be prudent to seek a second opinion.

In the first pic, the oil pump assembly is item #17, in the second pic, the check valve is item #4 and item #5 is the line that goes to the oil pump. The shaded item above #6 is the fuel pump. These only apply if your engine has carbs.

Hope this helps.

Chris...............
