80-90 hypoid is the listed oil but Quicksilver Premium L/U oil is better than the 90w.

Wal-Mart should carry Sta-Lube or other aftermarket brand of Hi-Vis Marine-Grade gear oil which will lubricate your outboard's lower end just fine, for under $5/qt.

The $12/qt oil is Good Stuff, but it's rather overkill for your classic Merc.

Note that although you can use regular 'ol automotive gear oil in a pinch, marine-grade oil has special additives, formulated for the harsh marine environment.

Once the oil is in the unit it's sealed. How does the "harsh marine environment" come into play?
