I have an older boat that im putting a new motor on. I need a 25hp long shaft with remote. Whats the best brand? 2-stroke or 4-stroke? Do I have to use a remote made by the motor's manufacturer or can I get one on-line for cheaper?

Thanks

Buy one from a dealer you trust and that can service the unit, should you have trouble.

There are some choices in controls. However, you need to decide on a brand first.

I would only add by the most advanced 2 stroke you can buy with a well established dealer close by.
Evinrude Etec comes to mind unfortunately I think their smallest is a 40.

In this size range, I'd go with a 4 stroke...IF fishing/trolling will be in your future. Honda has been at 4 strokes longer than all the others combined. Great, sleek looking motor too! Why put up with all that stink and noise of a two stroke if you don't have too?

Re: What new 25hp outboard?

I did a brief check and there doesn't seem to be a lot of new 2 stroke 25s out there in the more common makes. There may be some left overs but The only common 25 2 strokes I found were Yamaha and leftover
Johnsons. The Yamaha does sound interesting In that it is light at 109 lbs 46 less than the Honda. It is also 100:1 fuel mix which should just about eliminate smoke and stink .I think they have a good dealer network though not like Merc and BRP.

Re: What new 25hp outboard?

I would look at it from a different point of view- figure out how much weight the back of your boat can handle and compare various outboard hp's based on weight. Two-strokes are currently much lighter than 4-strokes, and also cheaper I think. I just received my 25 yamaha that I had on order since Sept. The reason I got it was it's 106 lbs for 25hp vs 111 lbs for a 15hp 4-stroke merc and 157 lbs 25hp efi merc. They are definitely being restricted by the epa and state gov'ts. My dealer said he would have no problem getting it for me other than having to order it and wait, but he wasn't clear whether there would be absolutely no 2-strokes in the near future as in no longer manufactured, and I thought he said there was a limit on the number being sold or could be ordered. Onlineoutboards is advertising $3k or $3100 shipped for a 2-stroke yamaha 25, shipping cost included. I considered them till I talked to a good dealer here and got mine after 6% tax + a gallon of oil and pint of ringfree for < $2800. I would be weary of the online sales, go through yamaha or other manuf. website to find a good distributor. If you really want an outboard and want a 2-stroke for whatever the reason, I wouldn't wait to long or you will be buying a 4-stroke regardless.

The Yamaha 25 two-stroke will continue to be manufactured, but their importation to the U.S. is supposed to end in December. It's a good ,solid, older design and should provide excellent service life and reasonably decent performance. The 25 EFI is superior except for price, weight and hole shot. If you can handle the weight, hole shot isn't critical and have a spare $3700.00, then the Tohatsu/Mercury is the better choice.
