I have a 1971 1150 silverblock for parts, and it is in fairly good shape. If ya need the distributer or something, (other then the lower unit which: I want), let me know. JR

Thanks, but I have an excellent parts source...if ya need something, lemeno

I'm not trying to argue.

Just think about this............

Gas today, gone tomorrow.

Although your question related to octane,
(a specific scientific operational perameter),

any assumtion that what was gasoline yesterday,
(or dated remarks concerning it),

might be the same as what is available today, or tomorrow, can change without much fanfare or notice.

Totally agree. (I was not planing to go to sleep on this issue, [I always watch me telltail too!]). I have run these old inlines very sucessfully since 1986, and I've run them a lot with surprizingly few problems. I have learned over time various things about the old girls and have adjusted accordingly.

I knew that most states (or the Feds in some cases) force alcohol into our fuel for political 'feel good' cornsiderations, (as it does not make sense from a practical or scientific standpoint to increase the cost of food to force us to use fuel that requires energy to create and is not nearly as efficient, [or compatable with the existing fuel systems], as the dinosaur fuel the alcohol replaces), and causes far more problems then any potential gain, IMHO. That said: I also know the situation is both dynamic and highly illogical, (anytime politics is involved that is usually the case), IMHO.

I hope my bright blue state is slow to follow yours and ban the older 2 stroke motors outright, but we have lots of Liberals up here (that luv to copy California) to interfere in our affairs n' mind our business, so I'm prepared for that eventual cornsequence. Washington State does not title outboard motors, so it may take the minders up here some additional time to do what they must be dying ta do to us.

It has been a few years since I did this execise (about alcohol in the gas), and I am learning my old assumptions will still hold for one more summer of pouring gas down the throats of my hungry inlines. At least I know for a fact a major retail fuel provider: CHEVRON does not have alcohol, which causes big problems, (phase seperation et al) in this wet climate for my old motors.

I am waiting for Safeway, (who buys from Richland Petrolem out of Canada as Costco does), to call me back and I will post their reply as well. I think the disclosure stickers on the pump, (in this State), still serve to help boaters avoid alcohol, (unless they don't care, and have plenty of money to spend to fix their fuel systems). Respectfully JR

My comments were for TODAY. Mid grade is a 50/50 mix of the high grade and low grade. So longs as your propped right, and have the max advance set right - the things will run on low-grade. Mid-grade is added insurace with only 1/2 the potential alcohol.

I intend to follow your advice. I used to run 93, (as I was told to do), but I am now cornvinced by you and the others here to run mid grade or the 50/50 mix of 87 and 92/3. If the fuel is not immeadiately cornsumed n' stays in the shed fer a bit I will put Stabil in it or something similar.

I have always tried to avoid alcohol as well, and Chevron is still providin' dino fuel as of 6/2007 here in God's country, did not hear back from Safeway/Costco, but I bet they don't have alcohol here in Washington either.

I have always been cautious about running my old motors at WOT for long periods of time, and your recent posts are also very helpfull in reinforcing that point, that others should take note of as well.

That is probably why I have always been treated very well by me old inlines!!!! Thanks for the post, wish you lived closer as we would do business, 'cause I luv these ol' girls, n' plan to keep runnin' 'em. JR

Hey State of Washington Boaters!!!! GREAT NEWS!! Safeway Corporate called me back today. Safeway does not have alcohol in their fuel!! If they decide to change that policy they would be required to post the alcohol content disclosure I mentioned earlier on their pumps. Costco also buys from the same oil company and would be governed by the same disclosure rules in this state. Hope this helps you folks save some money this summer. Chevron does not add alcohol either as I reported earlier. JR
