I got my new secondhand engine back and they have replaced a piston that was seized and all the piston rings from the 4 pistons. plus the upper main bearing.
It is a '99 johnson 90Hp V4 looper

I had put quicksilver tcw3 oil in the tank and pre mixed to make sure that the vro works.
Now I got another bottle of oil from the store and they gave me synthetic quicksilver oil.

I have been reading around and am afraid to use this oil because the engine ran befor on cheap oil by the previous owner ( that is what caused the piston to freeze ). and changing to synthetic is also expensive out here 50$ for 1 gallon.

What would you all advise me to do and if I should go the synthetic way can I just add it to the normal tcw3 oil that is still in it ???

I don't want to spend another 2000$ on a rebuild.

Thank you in advance
Stef.

If you have done everything that the person that rebuilt the power head told you for break in, go ahead and use the synthetic. Part of the TC-W3 certification is compatability. I would run the tank down pretty far and then add the oil. When its gone, if you want to go back to a regular oil there will be no harm done.

It is very unlikely that any TC-W3 rated oil caused your engine to fail. There are many more likely suspects.

The wrench doesn't know why it failed but feels the need to sound like he does.

Most often, they seize from too lean or too hot. Make sure it's pumping water and the heads are not hot. I'd be tempted to rebuild the carbs also since the kits are only about $20 ea.

No offense..... but don't be so quick to absolutly say an oil issue did not kill a motor. Previous and current owners don't always know anything more than what grandpa told them they used back in the day. I serviced a lower unit and fuel pump for a guy just the other day that was running 30 weight crankcase oil "cuz thats what grandpapy did". He didnt know TC-W3 from C3PO or R2D2. End result is coked up rings getting jacked out of the groves.......oil and IGNORANCE related.

Look at on-line availability. I know one site I looked at was comparable to Wal-Mart price in my area in the U. S.. From my experience, from an engine wear standpoint, synthetics are the way to go.
