I'm working on a alpha one mr and I want to make sure the gear lash is set correctly. I know this much, the shaft has a needle bearing at the bottom and a taper roller bearing at the top with the taper being wider at the bottom of the bearing you would shim somewhere, after that I would only be guessing. Can someone explain the rest please?

There are no needle bearings in a outdrive. both ends have tapered roller bearings
to shim correctly you need the tool and you add/remove shims at the bottom race and the top cap race to get the clearance

are you working on the upper unit or the lower unit? upper uses 2 tapered roller bearings, the lower uses 1 in the upper part of the case and shimming the pinion gear is done by changing #20, the shim

Thank you for your help. I'm working on the lower unit of a 1988 MR your parts break down is a little different from the link I attached. On mine there is no 15 and 16 also the taper roller bearing is flipped over from what your showing, now I'm really confused.

The manual is a bit vague on some items. you should not have a preload spring on the top of the shaft. you should have this retainer with the 4 slots. remove it,
remove the race, and you will find the shims under it.
