What silicone??

My bout seems to be taking on water from 2 places:

1. the swim latter where it is screwed into the fiberglass

2. from the bumper (rubber stripping) that runs around the whole boat it is only coming in at where the bumper is under the water line.

i will remove the bumper and seal any holes with silicone.


What silicone/ caulk is best for this situation??

3m4200 will do the job and still let you take it apart if you need to. 3m5200 is pretty much permanent.

That strip that runs around the boat usually don't sit under the water. Pull off the strip and if the metal bracket that holds the rubber is screwed into the boat back off the screws and use marine silicone ( 10 bucks for a tube ) on the threads. should seal it, or 4200 alot more money for less.

Same for the swim platform and if i were you any other hole in the hull can leak such as the eyes on the transom for strap downs, transdrucer cable and speedo tube, anything like the winch eye, bow light, radio antenna screws, and cable, windshield screws. Cleat screws.

You can use sillycone if you want the repair to last for a year or less.
If you want it to last longer, consider 4200 or 5200 or any quality polysulfide sealer, anything but sillycone.

Hmm, are you talking about your rub rail? Your rub rail should not be underwater???!!!! I can see a wave hitting the hull and getting the water in thru the rub rail.....

Use 3m4200, specially for the swimming ladder...

Agreed, these things should not be underwater. Keep in mind that all I/O's leak to some degree. Is this excessive leaking? I wouldn't consider 4-5 hours of boating to 2-4 minutes of bildge pumping to be out of the ordinary.

How much do you have coming in, and are you sure these are the sources of it?

hey guys. i have narrowed it down to those 2 places i mentioned..

My bumper runs all the way around the boat. and it only touches water right in the back by where my latter is.

i wouldnt call it a swim platform. but its built into the boat to where you can stand on it and jump in or sit on it and dangle your legs into water.

either way when the boat is weighted down on the back this part partially submerges under water and includes the bumper.

So i know this is where the water is comming in from. i followed the trailer home yesterday and when goin up hills i could see excess water in the boat trickling out holes where the bumper is..

i will post pictures to show you guys exactly what i am talking about.

please do... your rub rail should not be underwater due to boat weight... if it is you are seriously overloaded!!!

i think, he is talking about a suport bracket that is below the water line, for an 18 inch fiberglass swim landing, If so, go to a hardware store and buy a "comode tank repair kit." that has 4 rubber washers, use those on the TWO!underwater brackets,inside and out. and forget the sylicone. If water is coming out as high as rubrail, then you have a sinking boat! Look in your hold now and then to see if you are taking on water, thats what a bilge pump is for. lots of older boats take on water. at end of day, remove drain plug, if a lot of water comes out. Look for cracks in hull.

here are the pics..

here is the back of the boat so you can get an understanding of where the water is coming in from. Me and a friend (AROUND 400LBS TOTAL ) were both standing on each platform fishing.. our weight cased the boat to sink down and let water cover our feet placing the bumper under water

Someone allready Caulked the bumper all the way around the boat (factory maybe) The water level is usually right at the bumper when i am not standing on the back. about up to the paint line.

This is the bak of the boat notice the cup holder i pulled out.. it was full of water. the foam underneath was wet but has dried. Never had this happen before.

you cant really tell but in the back there is a small slit where the platform is molded into the transom. this is full of foam you can see a small amound in the back right hand corner.

here is the insode of one of the swim platforms from inside the boat. there was a puddle of water in the way back when i originally pulled the boat out. which made me believe it was coming from in there.

upclose picture of inside of the swim platform. here is where the water was. Notice the rivets in the back. that is where the bumper is riveted to the hull.

Here is a picture to give you an idea how the swim "platform" was made into the transom.




SO MY PLAN IS TO KEEP MY FAT ARSE OFF THE PLATFORM FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME THAT WOULD CAUSE IT TO SINK AND ALOW WATER THE WAY IT DID.

i think the heavy combo of both guys was enough to make it low enough to take excessive water.

Im gonna seal around the bumper and the rivets/screws holding it on. Everyone here seems to say 4200 is the best to use.

i am no expert but i think that you will need to clean and remove the rub rail in this area and reseal with 3m 4200
but do not use regular silicon as it is not made for boating environment

yeah that is my plan. ill; just take the whole rail off and coat everything in 3m 4200
