I don't want this to sound like a whiney thread, but I'm starting to wonder about myself.
I'm sorry about this threads' length, but please, if you have time, read it all, so you can understand where I'm coming from on this issue.
As most of you know, I work at an airport, and one of my jobs is fuel quality management (hence my username). I enjoy the job, but it has zero upward mobility. If I stay, in 20 years, I will be doing the same thing.
I work the worst shift on the clock, (night shift) and I work alone most of the time, so it's up to me to get everything done. I worked there 3 years before being "promoted" to crew chief ( of a crew of 3 when someone else was actually there) with a 1/hr raise in pay. Some other guy comes in with zero experience and in 4 months is promoted to crew chief. Not to toot my own horn, but I'm the only one out of 13 line guys that has never damaged an airplane, and I've been there half a decade. That guy who was promoted after 4 months damaged at least two planes, that I know of.
I spoke with someone from one of the airlines and she said why not come work with us. I asked her what I'd be doing and what it paid, she said basically I'd be throwing bags (loading baggage) for 8 bucks an hour, substantially less then what I make now. I told her that was a lateral, or if anything, downward move, and no thanks.
Well come to find out someone who worked for us for about 2 months got the job. In less than a month with American Eagle he was promoted to fuel auditor, flying around the country for free, all expenses paid, to audit the fueling facilities (like what I work for) that serve their company's planes fuel. BLEEP? I made my decision based on the information I was given. He got the job because of his "fuel experience." BLEEP? He worked for our company for 2 months, and he got the job because of his "fuel experience" that, as you can see, could have been measured in days!!! I've been with them since 2002!!! He's now making about twice what I currently make. I wasn't told about the fuel auditor opening, so I turned it all down. I couldn't risk losing a half decent paying job to go throw bags for less in the vein hope that American Eagle could move me up through the ranks.
Another young kid from our facility just left and was gaurenteed (sp?) a 40k/year job with UPS in the business department upon getting his degree in business. BLEEP? I already have a degree in business from the same university he is attending, and was only offered a job to deliver packages when I applied.
And worst of all, when our (flight) line manager quit, the owners son was promoted to line manager. This kid has the managing ability of a tree stump. There were 3 line guys that had been there way longer than this kid had, one had worked there longer than this kid had been alive, and none of them got the job, or were even offered it, with one of the three having a degree in business from the university I attended. I am more pissed about this one than any other, not because I wasn't offered the position, but because it would have been a golden opprotunity to give someone who'd been there at least a decade the chance to run the line, which would have made for a chance for improvement of the entire line department. Instead, this kid comes into the picture and nothing changes.
Oh yea, the old line manager came back, and when his job wasn't available, my boss created a position with no known duties, for the same salary he was making before. Basically, he rides around on a golfcart for 35k/year.
Like one person affectionatly told me, I'm being BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP. It's like I can't figure out why the BLEEP BLEEP keeps hitting me in the face. The customers I deal with during the night love me, as do the airlines in the morning (why I was offered the job with Amer Eagle in the first place) and my bosses will bend over backward to accomodate me when I need time off.
But give me a raise or a promotion, and it ain't gonna happen.
FWIW, I've had 3 job offers since 2006, all for less pay then what I'm making now. It seems every time I stick my nose out I get offered less then I already make, yet kids come along with less experience and blow right past me.
Not to toot my own horn but I have a college degree (4 year, not 2), I'm a private pilot, I'm very computer savvy, I've taken an IQ test and scored a 120, which was in the top 90 percentile of everyone who'd ever taken it. I just can't put my finger on what's holding me down.
