So this weekend is my first opportunity to go out for a float in the boat, so "we" start to summerize it today.
As we remove #8 plug (rear starboard plug 260 merc), it is rusty and wet with water??
It is the only one out of the eight
(We winterized last october)
Bottom of drive was off, so I pulled the coil wire off and turned it over, out came about two table spoons of water, thank god it was not seized, did a compression test
( I know it was a cold block)
and got 80 psi
How would/could water enter the cylinder???
thanks
Rob

So neighbour and son came over and we put the drive back together, put the water to it, and away she fired.
let it idle, then revved it up and down for a few minutes.
pulled the plug and checked the compresion
140 PSI YAAA

Howdy Rob,

Most likely, you have leaking riser gasket and the little bit of water in the riser ran back into that open exhaust valve when you shut it down during winterization.

"THANK'S RICK" :)
This one was pizzing me off, I hope when I fire it up that the compresion goes way up.

Ayuh,.... I agree with Rick,... Unfortunately, now you need a Motor...

Take the manifold apart,... You'll see Rust where the water was leakin'...

Why would I need a motor???

Re: What the heck!!! (update, YAAA)

I had the very same thing happen to my previous OMC 460.

There was riser gasket leaks on both sides and it would hydrolock every time I started it after prior running...... If I let it sit for more than about 30-45 min it would usually crank right up.

The small amounts of water in there did eventually leak past the rings and end up in the pan. When I subsequently ran the engine that small amount of water would eventually evaporate out of the oil during day at the lake.

Mine also sat for a winter with small amounts of water on top of the cyls that had open exhaust valves and when I pulled the heads, I could see the corrosion that resulted from the water that was allowed to sit in there. The cyls were scored as well but the engine still ran.

You might get the engine back for a while. There'll be rust and corrosion on the cyl walls and the rings probably won't seal well. that cyl and/or others will probably burn oil and that plug will probably foul a little more often too. Eventually that could cause a detonation event during a WOT run or hole-shot.

If there were other exhaust valves open or slightly open, there'll be rust in those cyls too. You probably won't see that unless you pull a head.

Good luck.

He said it got 140psi after he ran it and checked it again.
I wouldn't condem that engine just yet.

Ayuh,... I posted Before the edit/ update...

Good News,... Run it...
