Needs a new engine and gas tank. Grandma stored it for several seasons without having it prepped. Now the Volvo engine is shot and the gas tank. I think it around a 1990-ish. I parting it out a solution? I'm not sure Grandma is into that. Post it on eBay?? Its a pity because from the outside it looks new. Any suggestions welcome. Boat is near Ann Arbor, MI.

Answer depends on how mechanically inclined you are and if you want to keep it. Probabally not economically feasable to replace the motor and tank and then make any money selling it. Unfortunately a 90 bayliner isn't worth a whole lot even with a good engine in it.

sell it "as is" disclosing "motor inoperable." A DIY may be able to salvage the motor, but don't suggest that. If the trailer is in good condition, emphasize that, too.

Lots of boats are sold without motors; i just saw a local CL ad "motor ran 15 years ago when it was stored" but he also added that it probably needs to be replaced.

if it's truly in great condition (otherwise) it would sell, but if there are problems with the hull or interior, too, it may be a problem. In either case, parting out isn't worth it.

And always take the first offer.

Now the Volvo engine is shot.....

Shot: as in the engine block is cracked and spewing water out, or a rod hanging out of the side of the block, etc,,, or it just hasn't been run in a long time and won't start? What's "shot" with the engine. Also, what's bad with the tank, leaking or just full of garbage.

Maybe a dumb question but how would an engine be consider shot if all it did was sit there? I've seen episodes of American Pickers where they come across something like a motorcycle that's been sitting in the weeds for 50 years and as long as it isn't seized up they feel confident they can bring it back to life.

means Grandma shot it when the raccoons got in the garbage and she missed?

He said "stored without being prepped" so if it's north of the Manson-Nixon line, very likely frozen block. But anyway, to avoid problems, he would be best to sell it as "shot" unless he wants to spend time/$ to get it running, sell for a little more "as is" and risk dealing with an unhappy buyer no matter what the bill of sale said.

If its a Volvo drive its going to be 1986 or older. Bayliners used OMC in 87 up to the year Brunswick bought them and then it was Mercruiser after that which was around 1990 or so.

OK, so Grandma is resting on a rocker and fanning herself ... she says:
"cracked block, because the anti freeze dried up so when temperature reached 30 degrees it froze and cracked the block.
engine is scrap ( I have a closed container).
Exchanger allows water to circulate - it is broken
There appears to be freeze damage in propeller.
Port broken up.
Engine is a 2.3 liter 275 Volvo Penta Engine
Fuel tank: gas sticky and varnished. Needs to be cleaned with solvent (or steamed)
Carburetor is all jelled.
Trailer is in VGC."

This from a local guy who was kind enough to buy her a glass of wine afterwards.

Grandmasboat, you and I have a greatly different version of mint if the motor is shot. I would post on craigs list. I wouldn't mention mint anywhere. Just the facts in the add.

Hi Charlie ... I did say the boat was mint ... the engine was not. If it was a '63 Corvette split-window coupe, Grandma would have an outstanding project. Too bad. It is sad that a boat in otherwise great [mint] condition, must meet it's demise because the engine is bad.

this kinda demonstrates why the efforts to maintain a low-level boat in prime condition are a waste of time, if the object is preserving value. just like cars: a 25 year old garage-kept Taurus, washed weekly and with all repair bills, is just a 25 year old Taurus.

ask for $1200- take $900--disclose condition and sell "as is"-- clean it up well and post good photos--someone might have access to a cheap motor looking for something to do with it.--what do you have to lose??
If you want to fix it & use it look for a deal on power.

not the case at all in my area. Entry level boats like Doral, Sunbird and Bayliner all fetch good money if in good condition... same as SeaRay or any of the perceived quality lines. Especially with pontoon boats... no one knows one brands from another - they just go by condition.
I can't make the connection to your car reference, but I'm in the rust belt so no such thing as a 25 year old Taurus... or 25 year old anything driven year round.
But there are a couple of ultra cheap entry level cars from the 60's I wouldn't mind having in mint shape... like a 6 cylinder Mustang or Camaro..

I think Home Cookin' was refering to whether or not it's a classic. The taurus (non SHO of course) will likely never be a classic - afterall, they were producing close to 500,000 of them a year for a long time. The pony cars, regardless of trim level were classics. This of course is subjective. Just like I think my 71 Honda CL450 Scrambler is a classic, while others see it as another 70's jap bike. The bayliner in question is almost certainly not a classic. Not because it's an entry level, but because they are a dime a dozen.

IMO, grandma has only one decision - does she want to keep the boat? If so, look for a motor, swap it in, and have fun with it. If not, sell it as is. She'll never get the money out of it if she fixes it up purely to sell.

Local Guy, you are a Prince among men. You must know she was born on Independence Day. This boat was her own expression of independence. Cancer got in the way of maintaining the boat as meticulously as the rest of her possessions. I hope I live to see age 76 ... when/if I do, I might have more insight into parting with lifelong dreams ... more that I want to ... likely. Anyway, I know you did right by her - I just wanted to give her a sense of affirmation that your prognosis was correct.

Warmest personal regards,

her son,

Michael.

Michael,
regardless of Grannies intentions or motivation to keep on keeping on-God Bless Her

Dorals are not entry level boats....

It's a turd of a boat to me only because it needs a repower that I personally can't do in my driveway. For someone else, it's a real find ... if it's priced accordingly. Otherwise, Michael, you'll never sell it.
