What to do with cracked engine block?

Hi everyone,

I recently acquired a 18 ft Maxum runabout with a cracked engine block, which is now out of the boat and sitting in my garage. The head, manifold, fuel pump, starter, distributor, and all other accessories are out of the engine. The pistons, crank, cam, oil pan and water pump are still in/on the engine. This is a 3.0 Mercruiser engine.

Is there any scrap metal value in the engine and the manifolds/exhaust system? I know the head, exhaust, and block are cast iron, do scrap metal places pay any money for stuff like this?

If not i'll just tear it down all the way and take it to the recycling center where they take metal.

Thanks

Sorry I just realized I put this in the wrong forum, could a mod move it to non boating technical topics?

i would put the heads, fuel pump, crank, etc on ebay or craigslist. they still have value. the block goes for an anchor, or sell to the recylce yard.

Based on my experience with the scrap yards, they do not pay for small quantities. I would not expect to get anything for your scrap block.

Have a great day,

I recently scraped out a cast iron tub. I don't remember what the weight was only what I was paid. Took 2 people to drag it on the trailer. It had to be 350#
After about 2 1/2 hours for expended labor ,between loading, hauling, waiting in line to weight it and getting paid, I got $15.50. So the next time I run across cast iron, it goes in the trash.

You might have made more money selling it as a flower planter.

We have bins at recycling facilities where you just drop off your scrap iron. No hassle but you do not get paid for it either. Even if you did, for 300 lbs you would not get that much.

Depending on where the crack is.... weld it.

Can't remember the rod number but that was part of the test in advanced metal shop when I went to school.

You drill a small whole at each end of the crack to stop it, weld it shut, then peen the H*** out of it.

We had an old 350 we cracked with a hammer a dozen times, welded it shut, put water back into it, and it ran fine.

A few years ago I replaced an engine and took the bare block to the local recycler. They took it but didn't pay, which was OK by me- I just wanted to get rid of it.
And yes, put the parts on ebay or Craigslist. I sold the stuff I had taken off my small block and got about $150 when all done.

Boy, scrap metals are high bucks these days. Before throwing it away see if someone will come to your home and pick it up. They will give you a few bucks so why not. Ask around there is a scrap buyer in every area.

around here, scrap metal is $.06 a pound.
A junk vehicle is $.09 a pound.

Sell the parts, use the block as an anchor or donate it to the local high school auto shop...they can get some experience banging on it and welding it and it's out of your space to boot.

The iron block around here goes for about 4 or 5 bucks per 100 pounds. The cylinder heads though, which are irony aluminum (aluminum with ferrous materials mixed in) bring a reasonable price. When we part out cars, the cylinder heads get pulled, as well as aluminum trannys, to sell as irony, but the block stays in, and is sold for car body price (which is about half of the cast iron price, but for 200 pounds, and having to pull it from the car, it ain't worth it)

Hey custombycrunch? Is that you? I thought you were gone for good.
