I had a starter that was kind of flakey - working sometimes and not others. I went through Don's check list when it wasn't starting, and that indicated that the problem is the starter itself - the circuit test lights came on when testing the solenoid while turning the key but the engine still didn't turn over. Then tapping the starter/solenoid while turning the key got it to engage and start.
Our summers are pretty short here in upstate NY, so I ended up buying and installing a new starter. All is well with my boat now.
My question is what to do with the old starter. I took it to AutoZone and it passed their test - the guy there even ran through the test 5 times in a row when I told him it had an intermittent problem. Still though, I wouldn't trust the starter as it is to put it in my boat. I could try to get it re-built and keep
it as a spare....but I'm hoping to get several years at least out of my new
starter. I could try to sell it, but wouldn't have a clue how to price a marine starter that works sometimes...not sure if it is worth getting it rebuilt just to sell it?
Anyone have any thoughts?
TIA.
