My first boat was a 1962 Cutter 18 foot with 120 HP Chrysler complete with 18 inch fins like a caddy. This is the only picture I can find of it, that is my son he 31 Y/O now.

Re: What was your first boat?

I`m a fishing guy so my first boat was a 16.5 ft 2009 Legend Xterminator with 50 HP Mercury 4-stroke. I didn`t want to make any monthly payments so I was looking to pay it off right away and it cost me $19,000.
A year later I needed something a bit bigger and $38,000 later ended up with a 17.5 ft 2010 Lund Explorer 1725 Sport with a Mercury 115 hp 4-stroke.
So far I love this boat. It has everything I need.

Some plywood with styrofoam glued to it. At first, I used a paddle that I found. Later on, I bought a trolling motor from a laddy at a garage sale for like $10 and stole one of Dad's extra car batteries. Used that for some time. I made my own trailer for it so I could tow it, with my bicycle.

Later on, when I had mowed enough yards, I bought a 3 person raft to use.

OLD Larson tri-hull, with a 1972 Evinrude 80 or 85 Starflite

I bought it in terrible condition (but it did float) for $200, thinking I got a great deal. I believe I was 17 or 18 with no experience.

Maiden voyage long story short I used a car battery because the marine battery was D.O.A., scrambled up enough life jackets for everyone, and took off at about 7pm. Lower unit ran out of lube, and we paddled to shore and walked the boat along the shore a half mile back to the boat launch...Thank gosh for good friends!

This is the same make and model. Mine was blue instead of brown, and it didn't have the windshields (broken off)

My first boat was a 1996 Mariah Shabah Z210 Limited Edition with a 7.4liter merc and Bravo I drive. Captains choice exhaust and all the bells and whistles. I sure miss that boat.

First one that wasn't my dads was a 1980 Master Craft. I went to look at a 1984 BAJA and when I got there someone was leaving with it. It was 1986 and was way before cell phones. As I was leaving the neighborhood stopped at an intersection and looked both ways and saw the Master Craft in a yard with a for sale sign. Turned and went to look and it was lower priced and was like new. Ran if for several years with no problems and made money on it, like that will ever happen again.

I'm in it. 1993 Starcraft Eurostar 17' bowrider.

A friend's parents had a boat when I was a young teen and we had all kinds of fun on it. The wife and I kicked the idea around for quite a few years about getting one but didn't have the money for a major investment that we weren't sure we would like. We came across this Starcraft in great shape for a great price and took the plunge. We all love it and I'm already planning ahead for my next boat once we wear this thing out.

Re: What was your first boat?

I remember going boating with my brothers and sisters at a very early age,but the first boat that was actually mine was a 3 1/2 x 8 ft scow that I made from a couple of 2x12s and a sheet of 3/8 plywood. I was 13 at the time and it was my pride and joy. I rowed it around the local river( which was very slow) all summer, in the fall some duck hunter stole it and I never saw it again

Re: What was your first boat?

Our first boat was a 1989 Stingray I/O. Miserable first experiences with that boat. But we did purchase it as a, "learner." Funny thing is, I was in my mid-30's when we got it. I joined the Navy at 17, always wanted to pilot the captains liberty boat, grew up with always being in the water. So I'm not sure why it took so long to finally own one. No regrets now though. Even though our two teen boys still aren't into boating, I'm hoping they'll at least look back with fond memories someday and either let us get the grandkids into it or get into boating themselves.

Re: What was your first boat?

These are some great stories.:)

When I was a kid I spent many summers boating/fishing in Wisconsin but
living in Chicago a small boat wasn't in the cards. So last year I bought
my first boat at the age of 51.

It's a Voyager 16' aluminum jon boat with 9.8 Tohatsu 4 strk.

I recently acquired my grandfathers late 50's early 60's Neptune
Mighty-Mite outboard.:) Going to be awhile before it's running though!

Re: What was your first boat?

About a 1950 Halsey 15' all wood boat built in charleston,S.C., with a Johnson Seahorse 10. My dad and I ran it a lot and it was pretty with green below water line, white on the sides and natural varnish on all the decks, seats, gunwales, floors, transom. Lots of scraping and painting, motor noisy, not as dependable as modern motors, since it had ignition points, etc. and the gas/oil mixture was rich enough to foul a few plugs. Darn pretty Boat!

That reminds me of my early efforts, as a ten or twelve year old, at boat building. All I had were weathered and cracked short pieces of boards, which had already seen duty in various tree forts, and small left over pieces of plywood. The "boats" leaked like sieves and quickly sank.

Then two older and wiser friends introduced me to caulking - something I had never heard of before. Ah! What an invention!
