Re: What was your first car or truck or bike

LOL - so great to read all these experiences.

Like many of you, my first ride was a hand-me-down from an older relative. Mine was my aunt's, sister's 1974 Pontiac LeMans given to me by them in 1982 when I was 17.

It was just a putrid shade of caramel with a (if you can believe it) red vinyl roof. Gutless straight six in it and an advancing case of rust.

But, she was free, ran like a top, and was mine, all mine.

That car saved my life about three years later when I got T-boned by a Jeep Cherokee. Full-on driver's door hit at speed that caved in the passenger compartment on my side. Shattered plastic from the crushed instrument cluster exploded into my face and the impact spun that 2 and a half ton monster round and round. Sore neck and cuts was the extent of it. Had I been driving anything smaller, I wouldn't be here.

Next car was a 79 Mustang 2.3 with a 4 speed. Great car, although again - none too powerful. Sold that to buy a '66 Mustang coupe that was calling to me from the side of the highway. It was mostly bondo from the door handles down but I drove it through university then stripped and restored it after I finished school. I loved the mellow burble out of that 289. I haunted endless swap meets, collecting all the pieces to replace the slushbox automatic with a 4 speed toploader.

It was gorgeous but sadly had to go before I could complete my project. I was newly married and my wife and I needed a daily driver as it became obvious her little Volkswagen Rabbit convertible was too much of a POS to be relied upon. Although, when it ran, the Rabbit was a fun car. No power, but handled good.

Still waiting to own my first bike. And the call is getting stronger...:)

*Edit* - Ha! - found a pic of the Pontiac online. My car was identical to the one below right down to the colour except I had the vinyl roof and lacked those awsome bumper guards.

Talk about a face only a mother could love...yeesh...
