What year is this PLEASE!

Hi i'm would like to repair this old motor my father inlaw has but i cant untill i know the year and of course the plate is gone. I have 2 numbers off of it and don't know if they will be any help the first one is stamped in the side of the block 318928-1 and the other was on a cap on top of the block C8052718. Thanks for any help you can give!

First, in photo #2...get the number off of the Welsh plug (looks like a quarter sized) in the photo....

Your model number and serial number are on the plug,,,

It's a early or mid 80's 9.9 or 15, call the dealer with the plug stamp to get an exact year.

That's the number, the plug on mine has no model, just a number like you posted. What are you trying to order for it?

Actually in the pic where you can see the slow idle knob on the side of the motor I can see the model plate clear as day, it's been painted over, sand it off and post the number.

the shiny spot you see is someone else's attempt to sand it off, the plate is gone thats just metal you see. So can i find out the model and year from the number stamped on the welsh plug?

It's probably model year 1979.

Post a pic of the cowl if you can, it will help. The dealer can run the number on the welch plug to be sure.

Take the serial number to your authorized BRP/Evinrude dealer - she can look it up.

I have a 74 9.9 that looks just like it. the 9.9s & 15s look exactly alike. Parts are plentiful & the engine is easy to work on. There is a great user written manual somewhere on iboats - sorry I don't remember where but check the stickys & FAQs. Oh and these engines are relatively bullet proof.

Sort of, your 74 won't have a powerpack (has points) and has a lot of metal bits whereas his later motor has more plastic- IE shift handle , shift lockout.....I like the 74-76 models, no electronics to go wrong and the parts seem to last forever. The only issue on them can be the mag plate throwing the timing out from wear.

Do you have a photo of the cowl? That would help. Definately 1977-1985. They are basically the same during that period.

I'm thinking 1977-1984, as the coils are exterior - CDI.
Does your motor have a pee hole, I don't think they came out till 77 on.

from your flywheel picture, it looks like the 77-84.

is your shift lever and detent plastic or metal, if it is plastic, then your motor may be an 85-88.

can't tell from the pictures, but it looks like your thermostat is as located in the same place as the 77 -84.

On your carb, is the bowl plastic or metal, I think plastic bowls started around 1980's

Please let us know when you find out, what year your motor is.

Have to say that if you find a Johnson motor with a serial number close to C8052718 that is not from 1979, I will be somewhat surprised.
