What yyears this 140 evinride

Hey guys going to look at a motor for my starcraft. Guy says it's a 1989 140hp evinrude. Just curious if you all thought he was in the ball park. I know it's tough from one pic just curious thanks!!

It is a good motor, but like any other motor it depends on how it was taken care of.

Well thank you!! Yea I was just wondering about their reputation. I've had about 6 v4 90's and have always felt they were bullet proof if taken care of I just didnt know if they screw anything up when they tried getting more HP out of them.

That 140 should be a looper motor. Depending on the year of your 90 hp motors they were either crossflows or 60deg looper motors. Neither one of those have anyrhing in common with that motor. Now if that motor is an early 80s crossflow 140 then it is similiar to your 90 hp. Now ypu know why model #s are important.

Yea I get models #'s are important. Just was asking for a general age. I've never stepped into learning anything about the 140s. I have had loopers and crossflows. I had a 85hp cross flow, a 1991 90hp looper currently have an 1988 88spl. I own an 18' starcraft and just haven't been happy with how the 88 performs on it fully loaded and trying to pull a skier is quite the chore for it lol This is currently on a boat, my plan was just to swap the engines and maybe only lose 500 bucks or so. But I didnt know of there was any inherent issues with the 140s and wondered if 1988 sounded about right to you guys. When I own it I'll look into all the exact specs going to see it Tuesday well see what it looks like.

The first 140 Evinrudes appeared in the 1977 model year. They were upped 5 hp from the 135 "bubble back" V-4's in 1976. The second iteration, the big block, loop charged V-4's appeared in 1988. They share no commonality with the 99 cu. in cross charged engines from the 1970's.

Be sure you are refering to the propoer platform.

Im not sure what you mean, "referring to the proper platfrom". I originally asked for a general year. all I did was mention that the 90hp I have had from roughly the same year have always been bullet proof. and wanted to know if this one carries the same legacy as those engines do. maybe Im not a good communicator on here, because I wasnt trying to compare the 140 to the 90 only in is it a good engine like what OMC was putting out for the 90s in the same general time frame. sorry to cause such confusion with this comparison, some people think Im doing. Your question was fine we told you about what yr the motor was. The question you asked is the hardest question to answer. Motors are generally good from the factory. It is the 30 yr old motor that we know nothing about that makes it a hard question to answer. It is hard to compare an unknown motor to motors you have owned and have a history with.

Yea I guess thats where my assumption that we were all on the same understanding that no one in the world would actually know what condition this motor is in besides maybe the owner. I just meant, like the mid 1990's plastic gear VRO's go out all the time and detroy engines if your not careful. Best reccomendation is remove the VRO and mix oil yourself. I was wwondering on inherent issues with these motors kinda thing. Maybe you guys deal with answering a lot of dumb questions and automatically assume thats what happening. But I was asking are (these) good motors. Not, is this motor sitting in Potterville MI on a roached out boat a good motor. Please tell me its complete life history from one picture LOL Like I say sorry for the confusion, written text is the best way to misintepret and mis communicate everyhting. Your 90s VRO statement is a falsehood. I don't know where you got it from but that is a complete myth.
