I use a Coleman Xtreme it works just fine and will hold ice for 2 days.

...I see great minds think alike JB ;) Seriously though, if the guys from FL and TX, two of the hottest places in the country are suggesting Yeti, you might want to look into them. Just sayin'....

I have a Yeti too, but OP specifically said he didn't want to spend much. That pretty well rules out Yetis, Engels, etc.

And insulated top would help, but I would only use ice packs for temporary cool storage. Gotta be ice to keep the drinks cold :]

Pretty amazing how many folks are answering "Yeti" when the OP is looking for a SMALL cooler!!! What's the smallest Yeti? 35qt?

I just use a "California Innovations" soft-side cooler for day trips, works well enough with a little extra ice on hot days. Sodas go on the bottom 'cuz I like them cool, but I prefer water around room temperature (65-75 degrees), much easier to take a big drink that way.

LOL. Yeah, I knew this would happen. With a thread title containing the words what's and best cooler it was inevitable. Someone always posts that cooler test too. The fact is, if you're just gonna throw some ice and drinks in a cooler a high dollar rotomolded box is probably not worth the investment. However, if you need something that will last your lifetime that's the only way to go. Different strokes for different folks. BTW, Canyon Coolers (formerly Galaxy which was formerly Icee Kool) makes a neat little 22 quart cooler. Lunch Ice Chest

I saw a double-walled cooler at one of the big-box stores, but you loose space that way. Looks like a less expensive alternative to a Yeti grade for multi-day use like car camping or overnights on the boat.

Well yeah, but didn't you notice how I was careful to make both arguments at once? That's skill right there. Thinking of going into politics.

For a small cooler I use a playmate cooler with a insulated lid. As long as the drinks are cold when put in the Ice last 24 hours. If your not use the ice for anything but to keep things cold, put a little salt in the water before you freeze it. The salt water will Take a little longer to freeze, but it also lasts two times longer than regular ice. It also keeps things colder than reglar ice. In the same cooler with cold drinks the salt ice will last 48 hours.
