WillyB reminded me that I once saw lightning and heard the thunder simultaneously  I was in a car, but it must have hit just next to me. That is LOUD.

Lightning? Hey, that happened to me too! It was dark and it struck the ground about 20 feet in front of my truck on the way home from work. It made me slam on the brakes and jerk the wheel 'cause it was like a white tree in front of me all of a sudden. Scary stuff!
Funny... my kid (pic. above) slept right through it!

Lightning struck about 20' outside the window I was looking through.
Couldn't see much for 10 minutes, and saw spots for an hour.
Yes it was loud.

Was working 400 feet away when they blew the support pillars out from about 300 feet of elevated freeway that was being demolished. boom, then Kaboom when it all hit the ground.
Would have been nice to have a little warning.

Outlaws concert, front row.
Speakers were elevated about 4' off the floor, 8 feet from my left ear.
Couldn't hear much of anything for 8 hours, and my ears physically hurt for a day.

If I heard the question correctly then it was probably a Cat Cracker in a petro-chemical plant exploding, that wasn't just loud, it was scary too.

Stood on the tarmac when a Phantom F4 pilot decided to "go vertical" on take-off..........jaysus that hurt my chest never mind my ears

The loudest thing I've heard recently was Ms Deezy when she how small my paypacket was from my new job....................and she was 20 miles away :D :D

Re: What's the loudest thing you've ever heard?

While doing some sweeping for unexploded ordinance in Hohenfels, Germany (a huge training area) we found what we believed to be a suspicious shell showing through the dirt. There was a LT with me and he wanted to dig it up because it appeared to be made of brass. My persistance convinced him that first we would place a small charge next to it and detonate the charge. This would result it the ground being cleared and whatever was brass there would be uncovered.

A small 1/4lb charge was placed along side with a 45 second fuse. Once we ignited the fuse we moved away to what we considered "safe".

Well..... kaboom! It shoulk the ground, lit up the sky and threw rocks and dedris well over a half mile. The debris mushroom was actually thrown past us!!

It turned out to be an unexploded 500 lb bomb from WWII.

We both had our ears ringing and we were stunned from the blast. I bet to this day that former LT is still leary about brass objects.

sounds(pun intended)like the military is bad for loud noises. got me too. live fire in hoenfels for me too. ear plugs were in short supply. nice guy that i am, lent mine to a buddy but he didn't get them back to me in time for my live fire run. fired a dragon with ciggerette butts for ear plugs. bad idea. couldn't hear for a week out my right ear. still have a high frequency loss of hearing on the right side. what? :(

Up close to an old style unlimited hydroplane, powered by a Rolls- Merlin WWII aircraft engine (out of a P-51, I believe).

Now that is the sound of power!!

They didn't call them "thunderboats" for nothing.

Thats a really great pic Magster. :)

The loudest thing I ever heard was the sound of my 400 pound blue marlin slamming herself on the boat deck.

Re: What's the loudest thing you've ever heard?

When I was stationed on an amphibious assault ship, we had a ramp from vehicle storage to the well deck fall on a jeep and truck. It flattened them both.

The second would probably be my two sisters having screaming contests in the car when I was a kid. I never will understand why my parents let them do that. My ears would ring for hours when they were through.

Was that before or after Townsend impaled himself with the whammy bar while doing his windmill strum?

I was 11 years old and out on my grandfathers boats helping him fish pots when a pair of jets buzzed us so close they left ripples in the water .
