Re: What's with the non-iboats advertising on the forum?

I propose your sales staff get in touch with the following companies for ads

Victoria Secrets
Fredricks of Hollywood
Hooters

;)

Amen to that! But they'd cut into my reading time. :D

I really wasn't complaining when I started this thread. Might be time for a poll. I know which ads I'll be voting for:D:D:D

I just wish they would run a banner down the side or something, I hate pop ups. I did find it interesting that Chevrolet was advertising on a pop up, I guess my stolen tax money is being spent well....

I like to view the forum with my browser window sized to the thread, as shown in the attachment. You will still see the ads at the top of the forum but none of the stuff on the side.

Re: What's with the non-iboats advertising on the forum?

As the number of forum members and posts grow, running the site becomes more and more expensive. Ads pay the bills and because the bills get paid, we all get to enjoy an extrememly valuable site for free.

That said, I recommend a good and continuously updated firewall. Keeping Windows security updates current is also a good idea. I belong to a number of forums and have had problems with viruses obtained from pop up ads before, so I try to be cautious.

In fact, I just did a system rescue on the computer that I am now on, because of that very problem. I picked up something called "Microsoft Security Essentials 2011," which is a very nasty bug. It has been written in such a away to over-ride Windows Safe Mode and it locks out Malawarebytes and a few other virus/malware removal tools. I could of gotten rid of it manually, but all my data, favorites, etc., were backed up on an external drive, so I just rewrote the entire system partition, through use of my rescue disks.

Like most things in life, the ads have their good and bad points and the balence between the two, is what determines the overall value. For what we get here for free, I'll live with the ads.

Re: What's with the non-iboats advertising on the forum?

OK Ads are a fact of life but in this case it could backfire in that people could decide not to refer others to iBoat for buying merchandise since their is ad revenue. Don't ask me how I know this can happen.

As for the Ads I have never seen them but my computer has very strong security that blocks most everything even stuff I want to see sometimes. Personally I don't mind Banners but can't stand pop-ups.

I also no very well what the cost of running a forum board is since I have had a few over the years.

There is no such thing as FREE though someone always pays at some point.
Yup. And we've had this discussion before, but about spam emails.

Something that isn't considered is that iBoats isn't being CHARGED BY THE MEMBERS for the advice that the MEMBERS give. Many of the members are professionally employed in the marine field and could legally send a bill to iBoats for the answers given online. As a (now retired) engineer, I could charge people and companies for my professional advice. My standard rate was $400 per hour, minimum 2 hour fee.

While iBoats certainly has the right to make a buck, if it becomes too commercial or annoying, then members can leave (which does happen) or even start sending a bill to iBoats for services rendered. After all, iBoats isn't the only entity which is entitled to make a buck.

It's a two-way street.

Just my $0.02 and YMMV. :D

It could be construed that iBoats is soliciting by inviting the public to join the forums. Depends on the state and how good your lawyer is. Either way, iBoats is profiting from advice given by third parties.

Anything can be "construed," if the person involved is boneheaded enough to insist upon it. Then again, the other party can choose to ignore the nonsense involved and judges can choose to issue a summary judgement telling the "construor" to go find something better to do.

Ayuh,... It defies All Logic, 'n Common Sense,...

But you're Right....

Lawyers have Neither...

On to another point,...
With the changes gonin' on here at iboats,...
They've taken away a tool I most always use to tell posters to buy here at iboats...
That being the motor/ drive part listings that Used to be at the top of the I/O- Motors forum...

I like tryin' to Help,... Please don't make it harder than it was,..??

Re: What's with the non-iboats advertising on the forum?

but JUST recently a Chevy ad pop up keeps coming at the bottom third of the page!!

This forum has to get paid for somehow guys...just close it and move on.

Dealing with the ads is a small price to pay for the great info found here.
But the Chevy ad taking up the bottom third of the page was not centered
and the "close" button was hidden! It finally went off by itself.

Wow...I've read some really bad advice over the last couple years that weren't worth the electricity it took to push the POST button.

Since I use Firefox with the Ad-Blocker add-on, I never knew there were ads on this site. But I have to chuckle a little about "having to pay the bills" for the forums. The rules prohibit encouraging the purchase of products from iboats' competitors (at least if iboats carries the products), and many of us post links to directly to iboats product pages when a purchase is recommended. The forums are a marketing tool in and of themselves.

My thoughts exzactly.

I surf these forums whike wasting time at work, primarily from my phone. The banners are fine, but the popups really reak hell with the flash player in my phone. I gave up earlier cause I couldnt get it to load properly.

Yeah, I use Firefox also with Ad-Blocker and another one that eliminates ads on the right side of the page as well (Webmail Ad Blocker) and another that eliminates the rest... Adblock Plus.

Sorry, I miss all the ads here but I do check out the tabs at the top when looking for something to purchase for the boat... so not all is lost...

One would think they would have the product ads pay for the site? That would eliminate the ads right? Or is that part of the deal... they pay for the privilege to spam everyone not on Firefox?
